After scoring 500 goals and tallying 1,000 points, Alex Ovechkin joined two exclusive clubs full of NHL legends and Hall of Famers. 10 days ago, Ovechkin tied one of the game’s most iconic players, Maurice “Rocket” Richard, for 28th all time in NHL goals.
On Thursday, Ovechkin tied and then later passed HOF’er Lanny McDonald in points to move into 82nd place on the all time NHL scoring list.
In the second period, Ovechkin received a secondary assist on TJ Oshie’s 16th goal of the season. The tally put the Caps up 3-1.
In the third period, Ovechkin tallied another secondary assist. This time, Ovechkin combined with TJ Oshie to help Evgeny Kuznetsov score on a strong drive to the net. The goal put the Caps up 7-1.
The man Ovechkin passed on the list is one of the most beloved players in NHL history. I mean, check out this amazing photo bomb.
The mustachioed Lanny McDonald co-captained the Calgary Falmes to the Stanley Cup in his final season of 1988–89. He scored 500 goals and 506 assists in his 16-year NHL career. His total of 66 goals in 1982–83 remains the Flames’ franchise record for a single season.
Meanwhile, the two assists marked Ovechkin’s 290th multi-point game of his career. That’s only four fewer than Penguins captain Sidney Crosby for most in the NHL since 2005-06.
