Saturday night at Canadian Tire Centre, Nicklas Backstrom registered his 500th career assist on TJ Oshie’s 13th goal of the season. The assist put the Caps up 1-0 against the Ottawa Senators early in the first period of the game.
One former teammate had a special message up for Nicky immediately after the milestone: Brooks Laich.

“Congratulations to my brother @nicke19 on career assist #500!!” Laich wrote. “One of my all-time favorite teammates, an incredible player and an incredible friend! Pumped for you pal, go for 500 more!!”
Backstrom and Laich began playing together with the Washington Capitals in the 2007-2008 season, and continued to do so until last season when Laich was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forward Daniel Winnik. Laich now plays for Toronto’s AHL affilliate, the Marlies.
Even though we miss Brooksie, it’s great to see that his friendships in Washington are still going strong.
