A few hours after stopping 38 shots while backstopping the Russians to the IIHF World Juniors bronze medal, Ilya Samsonov was named to the tournament All-Star team by the media.
Samsonov was arguably Russia’s most valuable player in the tournament.

After a poor start to the tournament against Canada, Samsonov bounced back with five strong outings, including two shutouts against Denmark and Slovakia. In the semifinals against the Americans, Samsonov battled to stop 40 shots in the loss. Finally, in Thursday’s bronze medal game, Samsonov stopped 38 of 39 shots to lead the Russians to the overtime win.
