Karl Alzner is not known for his offensive acumen, but this is a new year.
After Justin Williams could not find the back of the net on a breakaway, Karl Alzner took a pass from TJ Oshie and ripped a blistering slap past Mike Condon. The goal caused one young Caps fan to chuck his popcorn in celebration.

The play was made possible because of John Carlson’s beautiful stretch pass from behind the team’s net.
Alzner, who called his goal “lucky” during his second intermission interview with Al Koken, had a huge smile after he scored. So do his teammates who mobbed him along the glass (as if to say “we can’t believe you were capable of doing this.”)
But they weren’t the only people excited. In multiple replays shown by CSNMA, one fan can be seen jumping up and down, causing his popcorn to be thrown out of its paper cup and onto the ground. The kid immediately realizes his folly, but after a second or two of regret, it’s back to celebrating.
I also enjoyed this young child to the right of the screen.
The tally was Alzner’s third tally of the season which puts him in a two-way tie with John Carlson for the team-lead in goals from Caps defensemen.
Happy New Year!
