Don’t look now, but Alex Ovechkin is now only six points away from 1,000 after tallying career goal number 542.
Ovechkin scored 11:32 in the second period off an indirect slap shot pass by Matt Niskanen. Nisky got the primary assist, the 200th apple of his career, but the Prudential Center’s lively boards probably should have gotten the secondary one.

Ovechkin’s goal gave the Caps a 4-1 lead. The tally made him 30th all time, passing Stan Mikita. Ovechkin now sits two goals behind Maurice “Rocket” Richard on his career.
As you can tell, Ovi was very happy about that fact.
33 seconds earlier, Ovechkin assisted on TJ Oshie’s rebound goal. With four games during the first week of January, Ovi may reach the 1,000 point plateau very early in 2017.
