A week after Barry Trotz went viral for his toughness, John Walton’s signature call is now having its day in the sun – sorta. Let me explain.
Saturday in women’s college hockey action, Boston University took on number-two ranked Minnesota at Walter Brown Arena. After 60 minutes could not decide the game, Natalie Flynn scored her second goal of the night to give BU a gigantic upset.
Boston University play-by-play man Max Wolpoff lost his mind.

“Good morning, good afternoon, and good night Minnesotaaaaaahhhh!” Wolpoff screamed, adopting the Caps radio man’s signature call. “Natalie Flynn the captain with a multigoal game. I have lost my voice in excitement!”
On Monday, the goal call went viral. Barstool Sports called the clip “the best hockey call of all time 1. Max Wolpoff 2. Al Michaels.” The clip has gotten almost 500k views by Monday night. The NHL Network also featured video of the call on its programming earlier Monday.
If Wolpoff’s name is familiar, that’s because you know of him. Max is a huge Caps fan and was one of the Crazy 8’s. His family sat along the glass at Verizon Center. Max and his brother would wear large foam yellow eights around their heads.
Monday night, I reached out to Max and asked him about his special day.
“My throat is still in pain after that call,” Max said. “I just wanted to honor John. I had heard it so much on Capitals broadcasts and in highlight reels. I even asked Walton if I could use it when he did a Reddit AMA, and he said he was OK with it.”
“So far, friends and family have all been supportive,” Max continued. “This has been the strangest day of my career. My boss here at the station, Alex Smith, had a call of his make Sportscenter’s #1 play. He was one of the first to congratulate me for this.”
Well now we’re the second. Congratulations, Max!
