Early Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins taunted the Washington Capitals about their lack of Stanley Cup banners. Later in the evening, the Hockey Gods would strike back.
Goaltender Matt Murray was forced to leave the game after being high sticked in the head by Evgeni Malkin – his own teammate.
After receiving a pass from Alex Ovechkin, Karl Alzner puts a shot on net and goes hard after the rebound. Evgeni Malkin sticks up for his teammate by mobbing Alzner in the crease.
Unfortunately for Malkin, not only does he knock Matt Murray’s helmet off, he also whacks his starting goaltender in the face with his stick.
Ouch.
Murray would leave the game and surrender the net to Marc-André Fleury. Murray would return to the bench to start the second period, seemingly no worse for wear, but out for the rest of the game.
Nice to see Matt Murray back on the bench pic.twitter.com/VAn3gzvIwd
