Team Russia destroyed the United States’ National Team 7-2 in Moscow Sunday. Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Dmitry Orlov will leave the 2016 World Championiship with bronze medals.
Russia scored four unanswered goals in the game’s first 32 minutes before Frank Vatrano broke Sergei Bobrovski’s shutout bid midway through the second period. The United States would never recover, giving up three more tallies. Russia’s Sergei Mozyakin scored twice while Pavel Datsyuk dished out three assists.
Among the Capitals’ big three, only Orlov tallied a point, an assist on Mozyakin’s first period power play goal. Orlov also injured Jordan Schroeder with a giant hip check in the first stanza.

This is Ovechkin’s third bronze in 12 World Championship appearances and his eighth medal overall. Kuznetsov, in his fourth appearance, has now won three medals overall. This is his first bronze. Finally, this is Dmitry Orlov’s second medal in two appearances. Previously in 2014 he won gold despite leaving the tournament early due to a wrist injury.
