Covering practices and morning skates at Kettler Capitals Iceplex is always an adventure. You want to provide your readers with good coverage, but you also want to make it out of there within three hours so you only have to pay a dollar to park.
Today, I made it by just a few minutes. As I was entering the on ramp to Route 66 West, there was a discreet vehicle in front of me. It was a white Mercedes S65 AMG with vanity plates. Everyone knows that car belongs to Alex Ovechkin.
Ovi and my RMNB-branded Miata cruised along in succession at about 55 MPH for a little while, soaking up the beautiful day. But then the Great Eight spotted a man driving a Honda Civic who happened to be wearing an Ovechkin jersey. Ovi pulled up beside him for a good minute or two hoping he’d notice him, but the man was simply too focused on the road to see the greatest goal scorer in hockey driving two feet away from him.
The encounter ended anti-climatically when Ovi took his exit onto the Beltway and I continued towards Fairfax, flashing him a smile before our lives parted ways for the time being.
Alex Ovechkin: he’s just like us — with a really, really fancy car.
