A week ago the Caps clinched a playoff spot when they took the Carolina Hurricanes to overtime (and later won with an Alex Ovechkin OTGWG). Now, with their 4-2 victory over the Senators, the Caps have not only clinched the Metropolitan Division title, they’ve also clinched East’s number one seed in the playoffs as well.

Excuse me while I…

This is the Capitals first ever Metropolitan Division title and their first Division championship since 2013, when they won the Southeast 7 out of 14 seasons. It’s also their first regular season Eastern Conference title since 2010-11.
Nothing is guaranteed once the postseason begins, but we must laud the Caps for accomplishing this feat during the 72nd game of the season, which is practically unheard of. The Caps also now have a guaranteed home-ice advantage through the first three rounds of the playoffs.
