After Washington’s 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 1, the Capitals essentially locked up a playoff spot with 96 standings points. Over the years, passing that threshold has essentially guaranteed a playoff spot (unless you’re the 2015 Bruins).
That’s why the below news from the NHL’s PR is a bit trivial. Tonight the Caps, who have 103 points, could *officially* clinch, depending on several outcomes.

So basically if the Caps win or lose in overtime tonight, they’re in the playoffs and can lose their next 13 games to end the season.
That’s pretty amazing. Also amazing: the Caps have a 99.7% chance of winning the President’s Trophy.
