For those who love your hockey with a side of hip hop, I have some fun news for you. Last week when Alex Ovechkin dropped by the ESPN Los Angeles set, he spoke at length about his relationship with Lil’ Wayne during an interview with Neil Everett and Barry Melrose.
In summary: Ovi is Lil’ Wayne’s “dude” and Lil’ Wayne is Ovi’s “man.”
Who’s your best friend? Who would you call to bail you out in LA?
Alex Ovechkin: Any player on my team.
I thought you would have answered that question with Lil’ Wayne.
[They roll video clip of Lil’ Wayne interview.]
Lil’ Wayne: Hey, yo. Aw, man. I follow the NHL, but Alex is my dude. He comes to my shows. He’s my dude. And he wilds out. Yes.
[ESPN cuts from feature and returns to Ovechkin interview.]
What does wildin’ out mean?
Alex Ovechkin: I don’t know. It’s my man. He’s my man.
How did you become homies with Lil’ Wayne?
Alex Ovechkin: I met him probably four or five years ago when he have a concert in DC. We take picture together. But I don’t have cell phone [number] but I’d love to have it. Especially in LA. I need it. I need it. I need your cell phone [number], Lil Wayne.
So last week, Ovechkin hung out with Kobe Bryant, had dinner with Wayne Gretzky, and got a shout-out from Lil’ Wayne. Not bad.
