For the second year in a row, Ovechkin has scored his 30th goal on Super Bowl Sunday. Last time it was an Ovi shot from the Ovi spot, assisted by Mike Green, and scored on the Blues. This time it was an atypical tip-in to tie the game.
Ovechkin has now scored 30 goals in every one of his first 11 seasons in the league. The only players to have longer streaks of 30-plus seasons are Caps legend Mike Gartner and obscure player of yore Wayne Gretzy.
According to RMNB reader Brendan Gannon, Ovechkin is nearly unstoppable on Superb Owl Sunday. On top of scoring his 30th goal last season, Ovechkin also had hat tricks in ’09 & ’10 and an OTGWG in 2014.
