Alex Ovechkin’s 498 career goal wasn’t a blockbuster. It wasn’t a decisive drive to the net, using a defenseman as a screen, or an Ovi Shot from the Ovi Spot, or anything like that. It was a gift, an accident, a farce.
And it still counts, dammit.

The Caps had the puck deep in the Rangers zone. Dan Girardi corralled it behind Henrik Lundqvist’s net and began the breakout.
Except no he didn’t. The pass went instead to Alex Ovechkin, an arm’s length from the net. Easy goal, no problem.
That’s 498, which should make the rest of this game and the upcoming week pretty interesting.
