Alex Ovechkin scored his Russian NHL record 484th career goal again tonight. It was disallowed after a coach’s challenge. Justin Williams was ruled offside upon review.
Ovi talked about it after the game with reporters.
“What can you do? It sucks again,” Ovechkin said, laughing. “Yeah, [Justin] owes me dinner and all kinds of stuff.”
Williams figured he’s done something no other NHL player has managed to do.
“Yeah I think I’m up for the Selke,” Williams said. “I’m shutting Ovi down pretty good right now. It’s two disallowed goals because of me. I want him to get it at home anyways. That was the reason [I did it]. Tough, but it was offside.”
Caps head coach Barry Trotz agreed with Williams.
“I was telling Ovi, ‘It’s probably fitting he gets to [break the record] in front of his own fans,'” Trotz said. “They’ve supported him all along. I think it’ll be a nice thing for him to do it at home.”
“He’s on pace for 76 goals and Williams has nullified two of them already,” Trotz joked. “Ovechkin’s exceptional at not being rattled by it. He’s going to get [the record]. As I said to him on the bench there, ‘It’s probably just fitting.'”
