The Capitals would not be denied two points Saturday night. Minutes after Alex Ovechkin’s game-tying goal was washed out due to a questionable goalie interference ruling, Nicklas Backstrom scored literally in the game’s final second to force overtime against the Leafs.
While below the goal line, Justin Williams threw a blind centering pass to the slot. The puck goes off a skate, skips up into the air, and hits Backstrom right in the belly. Thanks, Hockey Gods. The Super Swede then corrals the bouncing puck at his feet and shoots it just hard enough to push it just past James Reimer’s outstretched glove. CSN cameras showed .08 seconds left.
Evgeny Kuznetsov also deserves a lot of credit for keeping the Caps in the zone with this soccer-style keep at the blue line.
The Caps would go on to win the game after Alex Ovechkin scored in the fourth round of the shootout.
What a goal. What a win.
Way to go, Nicky!
