Alex Ovechkin just scored his first power play goal and his eighth overall of the season (Peter called it). The goal was also Ovechkin’s 483rd of his career, which ties Sergei Fedorov for the most NHL goals by a Russian all-time.
Ovechkin scored after using impressive hand/eye coordination to knock an Evgeny Kuznetsov centering pass on his backhand past James Reimer. It tied the game at one.
He was pumped.
A few minutes later, Capitals PA announcer Wes Johnson acknowledged Ovechkin tying Fedorov’s record. According to CSN Washington’s Joe Beninati, Ovechkin stood up and acknowledged the roaring crowd.
Congratulations to Alex Ovechkin, whose goal tonight tied Sergei Fedorov (483) for 1st place among Russian-born NHL players in career goals. #CapsLeafs #RockTheRed

“It’s awesome,” Fedorov said Friday to NHL.com after being honored with his Hockey Hall of Fame ring. “Records are made to be broken, so to me he’s always been the goal-scorer, and when he got close, I’m like, ‘Of course it’s him.'”
Fedorov will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday.
“It’s a huge honour because of all the great names in Russia hockey and he is No. 1,” Ovechkin said to the Toronto Sun Saturday morning after the Caps’ pre-game skate. “I was lucky to be on the same team and same line with him. He was almost like a dad. He was like a player and a coach at the same time.”
The Caps will play Detroit at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday and Ovechkin will see his mentor there. Fedorov will be honored that night for his Hall of Fame induction.
