Update: A Caps spokesman has confirmed that there will be no convention this year.
It’s starting to look like last year’s cancellation of the popular annual Caps Convention may be permanent. Multiple season ticket holders have confirmed they’re hearing the same message from the front office: There will not be a convention, at least not this season.
That makes sense given the other evidence, notably that there hasn’t been an announcement on the convention from the team. The convention is traditionally held in late September or early October; if it were on this year, tickets would already be on sale if not sold out. The website for D.C.’s Walter E. Washington Convention Center, where CapsCon has been held since 2010, doesn’t list any Capitals events in the near future, either.
First held in 2009, the CapsCon ran for three straight seasons until the 2012-2013 lockout canceled it for the first time. After returning in 2013, it was canceled again last season on account of the Winter Classic. (“Due to this big event,” a capitals spokesman told The Washington Post last year, “we will be focusing all of our efforts on the Winter Classic and will not hold a Caps Convention.”)
Previous conventions have been a great way to kick off the season with panel discussions featuring Caps players and staff and NHL officials, kids’ press conferences, skills games, and floor hockey — not to mention a great opportunity for fans to collect autographs or get photos with players.
If you desperately need an early season fan-event fix, you’re still in luck, though. The team announced Wednesday that the annual Casino Night is returning after its own Winter Classic-related hiatus, and it’s been moved from its traditional late winter / early spring date to Nov. 14 this season. Tickets go on sale starting Sept. 9.
