New Capitals forward T.J. Oshie will wear No. 77, the team announced Monday.
Oshie wore No. 74 in St. Louis, but as you know defenseman John Carlson already owns those digits here in D.C. and was not giving it up.
Oshie tried to have a reasonable conversation about his new number on Twitter Thursday, but that was derailed by his new Capitals teammates.
Only two other players have worn No. 77 for the Caps. One was defenseman Joe Corvo. The other was Hall of Fame forward Adam Oates. Coincidentally, Oates gave Oshie a ringing endorsement earlier on Monday during an appearance on St. Louis sports talk radio, saying, “Honestly, I like the player. He has played well for St. Louis.”
Oshie will join LA’s Jeff Carter, Montreal’s Tom Gilbert and Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman as the only active players wearing No. 77.
Thanks for all of the # suggestions! Going with 77. #Caps pic.twitter.com/lh8OZNEaZp
