Earlier in the year, the NHLPA did a feature on Alex Ovechkin and asked his teammates about him.
“The one thing I would love the hockey world to know about Alex is that he has the worst style ever,” Troy Brouwer said lovingly of his captain then.
This quote is particularly relevant now. Ovechkin participated in a charity basketball game in Russia on Saturday. And well– there’s no nice way to say this– he wore the ugliest shoes ever.
Already in an orange basketball jersey, white undershirt, and orange basketball shorts, the bearded Ovechkin decided to complete the look with fluorescent yellow (?) Nikes with red laces. To say it clashed is like saying magma is hot or Frosted Flakes are delicious.
The charity game was sponsored by GQ Russia and benefited the Step Forward foundation, which raises money for kids with cerebral palsy. It was held at Moscow’s Luzhniki Palace of Sports. Many government officials participated including Dmitry Rogozin, who was one of the first seven Russians sanctioned by Barack Obama for his country’s role in the Ukraine crisis.
In typical Russian charity game unwritten rules, the game ended in a 48-48 tie.
I only put this photo in because of the Madonna t-shirt.
