With the Capitals’ surprising win over Rangers at Madison Square Garden today, here’s a fun bit of trivia worth sharing. Via NHL Network, Wayne Gretzky scored the final goal of his NHL career 16 years ago. It came against the New York Islanders.
It was Gretzky’s 894th regular season goal and the 1,072nd of his professional career– if you include WHA/NHL regular season and playoff goals. With that goal, Gretzky passed Gordie Howe for most all-time.
Just to give you an idea of how many goals Gretzky scored in his career, he leads Alex Ovechkin– the 53rd greatest goal scorer of all-time— by 423.
Wow.
