On Sunday, Alex Ovechkin took a two-handed slash from Ryan Getzlaf. Ovechkin responded by falling to the ice like a sack of bricks. It drew the attention of the officials, who might otherwise have missed a dangerous play. The Ducks captain was whistled for slashing.
After the game, Getzlaf was irate. He called Ovechkin a diver.
According to the Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register, Getzlaf said:
“I didn’t know he was going to dive tonight the way he did all over the [expletive] ice. That part of it’s a little embarrassing, pardon my language. He’s a great player. He’s going to score goals and make plays. That other stuff’s embarrassing.
“The slash on me – the slash on his hand. When we ran into him and he dove down. All those things. It’s embarrassing to the game.”
Here’s the play in question.
Oveckhin responded after Tuesday’s morning skate at CONSOL Energy Center.
“No response,” Ovechkin said according to The Washington Post’s Alex Prewitt. “Maybe he’s just jealous. I have hair, he don’t have hair. We can start talking about it all day long. I think it was comment because he was disappointed they lost. Again, it is what it is.”
Ovechkin continued, “I don’t think somebody can call me diver in this league, but how I said, maybe he’s disappointed in all the kind of moments that happen.”
Yeah. Ovechkin’s got a full head of hair and he’s not afraid to diss a guy.
Thanks to @Zeisberger for tweeting the Ovechkin quote first.
