During every offensive zone faceoff for which Alex Ovechkin is on the ice, the Capitals try a set play. The center wants to win and get the puck back to the Russian machine. It’s resulted in a lot of goals for Ovechkin over the years, but tonight it ended up with Alex Tanguay having a bloody face.
Tanguay actually managed to get a stick on Ovechkin’s shot from the left circle, causing the puck to ramp up and hit him directly in the face.
Tanguay, who looked to be in a lot of pain, immediately dropped to the ice. He got up, held his bloody cheek, and skated with urgency to the Avs locker room.
Here’s another angle.

We’re hoping he’s okay.
Jack Hillen knows his pain. I’m sure he still hurts from this.
10:55 PM Update: The Avs say Tanguay suffered a jaw injury. CSN Washington’s Joe Beninati also reports that Tanguay left Pepsi Center in an ambulance and was taken to the hospital. Scary.
Avs PR say Tanguay suffered a jaw injury and won't return. Meanwhile, the gentleman next to me on press row is spitting onto the carpet.
