Alex Ovechkin isn’t competing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but he’s been there the whole time anyway, cheering on his girlfriend Maria Kirilenko in women’s tennis. Despite his spectator status, he’s gotten into the Olympic spirit, attending Maria’s matches and making new connections with international athletes.
The sadly unengaged Ovechkin has always enjoyed meeting fellow celebrities and has never lost his enthusiasm for it — this summer, he’s tweeting these celebrity run-ins as they happen, thoughtfully giving us a clear timeline of his new friends.
On the second day of the Olympics he met tennis star Novak Djokovic.
Then on Thursday, he met Serena Williams, who Kirilenko will be facing later today in women’s tennis doubles. The winner of that match will go on to compete for a gold medal — Kirilenko’s only remaining chance for gold after losing to Maria Sharapova today in women’s singles.
Williams and Ovechkin planned to exchange signed sticks and rackets.
Today, he met Lakers star and member of the dominant US basketball team, Kobe Bryant.
We are completely fine with all of this — as long as he stays away from Jaromir Jagr.
