Photos from Thursday’s practice: Smiley Capitals work on special teams after giving up three power-play goals to Pens

The Capitals took to the ice Thursday afternoon after the team’s 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins the night before. After giving up three goals while on the penalty kill, the Capitals spent over half their practice time going through special-teams drills.

Photos from the red carpet at the Caps home opener

Saturday before their home opener, the Washington Capitals walked a red carpet before absolutely throttling the Montreal Canadiens 6-1. The players, arriving in Capitals-branded Lexuses, were escorted down the red carpet by a fan chosen by the team. The Caps signed autographs, took photos, and showed off their fanciest suits.

The battle for final roster spots isn’t over yet

The New Jersey Devils came to town on Wednesday night for another preseason battle with the Caps. For the Caps, their opening night roster is starting to come into focus. The lineup against the Devils is the closest thing to a full lineup we’ve seen from the team this preseason.

Wednesday night was a big chance for a few players fighting for the final roster spots to make a favorable impression.

Photos from the last full week of training camp

A few hours before the Capitals made the most recent set of training camp cuts, the boys took the ice for another preseason preseason practice. Split amongst the two rinks at Kettler Iceplex, the Caps held normal practice before taking the ice as a team and working on their special-teams units.

The Capitals will host the New Jersey Devils tonight at Capital One Arena. With only three more preseason games on the schedule, the regular season is upon us.

Tyler Graovac was the Capitals’ best player against the Blues

The Capitals turned in a disappointing effort against the St. Louis Blues on Friday, losing 4-0. However, one, and maybe the only, bright spot was Tyler Graovac. The forward was the Capitals’ best player all night long.

The Capitals traded for Graovac early this offseason to allow the team to protect both Tom Wilson and Lars Eller in the expansion draft. While he was not expected to be an important piece for the team this season, Graovac proved tonight that he deserves at least a closer look for a roster spot on opening night.

Caps acquire Tyler Graovac from Wild for expansion draft flexibility

Wednesday night, the Washington Capitals made a minor trade that gives the team more flexibility ahead of the expansion draft.

The Capitals traded a fifth-round selection in next year’s draft to the Minnesota Wild for forward Tyler Graovac. While the loss of another depth draft pick will sting — the team only has four selections in the 2017 NHL Draft (fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh round) — the trade appears to have been made to protect a valuable forward on the team.

Heading into this weekend, the Capitals would have had to expose two of these three forwards: third-line center Lars Eller, fourth-line center Jay Beagle, and first-round draft pick Tom Wilson. Now just one of those three will be exposed, along with Graovac.
