Tom Wilson Gets in Two Fights in a Freaking Rookie Game (Photos)

On Monday afternoon, the Washington Capitals and the Philadelphia Flyers played a rookie game at Kettler Capitals Iceplex featuring prospects from both teams. It was a rather meaningless game, but still a chance for players on both sides to impress their management — or at least get a deal in the WWE. In the 60 minute game, there were four fights, a myriad of scrums and penalties, along with a occasional slew foot. Naturally, a lot of this involved Tom Wilson. The 2012 first-round pick got in two fights, lost half a tooth, and said some very, very naughty things to players on the other team.

Despite my perch between the benches, I couldn’t really tell how both his fights started, so I’ll let Wilson explain.

“I figured why not?” he said of the first bout. “Two good fights — that’s part of the game.”

Two thousand twelve first-round draft pick Tom Wilson is fawned over, with good reason. At 6′ 4″, he’s a mammoth dude who scores goals, hits hard, and unleashes a myriad of expletives — the personification of a hockey player. When Caps fans think of the Plymouth Whalers, Wilson is usually the only one who comes to mind. There is, however, another Washington prospect playing in eastern Michigan: fifth-round pick Connor Carrick.

Introducing RMNB’s Washington Capitals Prospect Rankings (Summer 2013)

[Editor’s Note: Fedor has reported on Washington Capitals prospects for RMNB for the last three years. This year we’re proud to introduce his prospect rankings. The rankings will be updated three times during the season– with the goal of updating you on how prospects are or not progressing. The first edition of the rankings come on the second day of Rookie Camp, as Caps prospects jockey for position within the organization.]

The Washington Capitals have re-stocked their prospect pipeline over the past two NHL drafts, giving fans a wealth of new players to get excited about in addition to a few solid free-agent prospects signings.

The 2012 Draft is turning out be a sterling spot on George McPhee’s resume. After picking Filip Forsberg and Tom Wilson in the first round, GMGM made a few strong picks in the latter rounds with Thomas DiPauli, Connor Carrick, Riley Barber, and Christian Djoos– all of whom have been invited to their junior national team camps and left good impressions.

Depth on defense is an area of strength for this crop of talent, with more than a few prospects ready to compete for roster spots as soon as they open.

Recapping Tom Wilson’s Two Days at the NHLPA Rookie Showcase

Earlier in the week, Washington Capitals prospect Tom Wilson participated in the NHLPA’s Rookie Showcase. The two-day event, held in Wilson’s hometown of Toronto, Ontario, brought dozens of the NHL’s most talented prospects together so that NHLPA partners Panini and Upper Deck could take photos and collect signatures for future trading cards. Big names at the event included 2013 first overall pick Nathan MacKinnon, third overall pick Jonathan Drouin, and that one Subban who plays goalie.

On day one, the players were split into groups and led through a series of sessions with Upper Deck and Panini. The uber-talented prospects signed helmets, sticks, and jerseys that will be sliced up and put into cards. Above, you can see that Wilson signed some cards with “Go Caps!”

Once the prospects were done signing and their hands were sufficiently cramped, handlers herded them into a room hosted by EA Sports, which probably did not help their sore hands. The players took 3D headshots (to be used in the NHL15) and then tried out the unreleased NHL14. Later, the players had a pretty intense tournament on the upcoming new release and Wilson– in the words of the NHLPA — won, “fearlessly dominating the entire group.” ‘Atta boiiii.

Caps Prospects Are a Pleasant Surprise at Lake Placid

Six Washington Capitals prospects participated in the Lake Placid National Junior Evaluation Camp tournament held this past week featuring teams from the USA, Canada, Finland, and Sweden. The Swedes unofficially won the tournament with three wins in five games.

Andre Burakovsky on Tom Wilson: “He Learned Me a Lot of Things Like Eating Peanut Butter”

Andre Burakovsky has been in North America for about a week, but he’s already made himself a new best friend. Rooming with fellow first-round pick Tom Wilson, the Austrian-born Swede was introduced to mac and cheese as he bonded with his new Canadian buddy. Well, RMNB’s Ian Oland asked Burakovsky if his bestie had him try any other new foods while he was here. The forward’s English isn’t perfect, but his answer was.

The Tom Wilson Wipe-Out GIFs

It was game six of the series against the New York Rangers, just the second-ever game in Tom Wilson‘s NHL career, and one of his skate blades has just popped off. Wilson hobbled back to the bench, courting bunches of GIFs and instant fan adultation. At the time I didn’t even realize skate blades could just fall off like that, but I guess when you’re a six-foot-four, 217-pound man-mountain, simple things like skating and checking can test the mettle of your gear.

On Thursday at Development Camp, Wilson’s equipment rebelled again, this time forcing the Caps prospect to wipe out at center ice while attempting a sharp turn. Like a bowling ball out to pick up a spare, Wilson’s body tumbled heavily towards the boards, stopping only after knocking over Caps video coach Brett Leonhardt. No one was hurt (woot) and laughs were shared by all.

Tom Wilson Explains How He Fell In Love With Hitting

Tom Wilson isn’t shy on the ice. According to hockeyfights.com, he’s dropped the gloves 23 times in junior. He’s broken his knuckles twice. He even earned the nickname The Ten Train because his brutal hits always arrive on time.

After the second day of Caps Development Camp, Wilson was asked if anyone in the coaching staff requested before last year’s camp that he tone down his game. Wilson responded with a wry smile and a chuckle. “I don’t know,” he said. “I can’t really remember having that conversation. Yeah, there’s a couple guys that went down last year. That’s just the way I play. It’s not really going to change.”

Later, Wilson revealed how nastiness became a part of his game at an early age.

Tom Wilson Chirps Little Kid at Development Camp

We’ve learned a lot from 2012 first round pick Tom Wilson in the last year. There was that clutch hat trick for Plymouth in the playoffs, his first professional goal in Hershey when he beat Chris Bourque in a footrace, and a brief appearance in the NHL playoffs with the big club.

We’ve also learned that Wilson’s a surprisingly good skater, that he has a good shot, and he’s precisely as physical as advertised. One other thing we’ve noticed: he’s a bit of a yapper. Last year during development camp, Chris Gordon observed that Wilson chirped his teammates non-stop on the ice. During a Hershey playoff game I attended in May, Wilson stood with Michael Latta at the bench and verbally accosted opponents. Head Coach Mark French admitted after the game that the 19-year-old “likes to get involved in the discussion,” which is a nice way of saying that Wilson talks trash. To anyone.
