Karl Alzner missed Saturday’s morning skate with what the team is calling a “maintenance day.” Alzner missed two days of practice earlier this week but played in Thursday’s game despite being “banged up.” Skating in Alzner’s spot on the second pairing alongside Matt Niskanen was Mike Weber, though Weber stayed out late with the heathly scratches.
Dmitry Orlov looks to be healthy scratch as well following a misplay on Nick Bonino that led to a goal in the second period. Capitals coach Barry Trotz benched Orlov for the second half of the game, save for one short shift in the third period. Orlov has not missed a game all season.

After Monday night’s anarchic attempt at a hockey game, the Washington Capitals held a 3-0 series lead. In 180 minutes of hockey, the Philadelphia Flyers took 96 PIMs. Washington’s power play was eight for 17. The Caps, it seemed, were in for a long layover before facing the winner of the Rangers-Penguins series.
“Everything they’ve gotten to a point we’ve given them,” Wayne Simmonds said in the minutes after Game Three ended. “We’ve got to stay out of the box.”
The Flyers have done that the last two games, reducing Washington to five power plays in Games Four and Five. Without that boost, the Caps fell when the series shifted back to Verizon Center Friday night. They outshot the Flyers 44-11 — shot attempts were 82-27 — but lost the special teams battle. Philadelphia had six power plays while Washington’s deadly man-advantage unit was limited to three.
“We were in the box a lot,” Tom Wilson, who did not receive any infractions, said. “Yeah, we had a lot of shots, but we have to do a better job of getting to the interior and staying out of the box. If we play 60 minutes five-on-five, I don’t think you see that team standing up by the end of it.”

The last twelve days have been a whirlwind for Taylor Chorney. A journeyman AHL defensemen for most of his career, the Caps’ 7th D earned a two-year contract extension that will keep him in the NHL through 2018. Chorns’ good play while Brooks Orpik was out injured inspired the Capitals to make a deal.
The monetary raise wasn’t the only thing Taylor’s family could celebrate. On Tuesday, Taylor Chorney’s wife gave birth to the couple’s first child, a son named Turner William. That night, Chorney was scratched for the Pens game and likely missed out on a lot of sleep, but with back-to-back games, Barry Trotz immediately put Chorns back into the line-up Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In the first period, Chorney’s good luck continued. The defenseman scored his first goal since February 15, 2011, and his very first goal as a Capital. How long has it been since Chorney has dented the twine? During that stretch, Alex Ovechkin scored a whopping 225 times.

Last year, the Capitals’ top defense pair was John Carlson and Brooks Orpik. This year, those two have missed a combined 43 games. Tonight, it was Carlson’s turn again.
“He probably saw the doctors tonight and we’ll probably have an update (Saturday) because I don’t really know yet,” head coach Barry Trotz said. “He’s not 100 percent or he would have played tonight. It is a lingering of the old injury so we just want to have the opportunity to let’s get it settled down or fixed. Whatever we need to do let’s just do it so that it’s not lingering on.”

Friday morning, the Capitals announced that they re-signed Taylor Chorney to a two-year extension. Chorney will get a raise over the $700,000 he signed for over the offseason. Chorney will make $775,000 in 2016-17 and $825,000 in 2017-18.
Chorney’s re-signing comes after the depth defenseman was a regular in the line-up for the longest stretch of his career. Chorney played 45 games after Brooks Orpik suffered a lower body injury. Chorney has been a healthy scratch the last two games since Orpik returned Tuesday.
RMNB’s Pat Holden recently wrote about Chorney’s good patch of play, where the defenseman’s possession stats ranked in the top half percentile of 173 defensemen who have played at least 500 5v5 minutes this season. The Caps may think it was good to strike a deal now with the possibility Chorney could have gotten a bigger deal if he reached the free agent market.

With Brooks Orpik returning from injury on Tuesday night against the Kings, Taylor Chorney found himself as a healthy scratch for the first time in 40 games. As Mike Vogel pointed out, this was the longest consecutive game streak of Chorney’s career and he performed admirably during the stretch.
Grubauer is indeed starting. Orpik returns and Chorney will sit after 40 straight games in lineup, longest run of his career. Job well done.
