Happy Halloween, folks, where today on RMNB it’s no tricks and all treats.

To celebrate everyone’s favorite spooky holiday, we are giving you a one-pound chocolate bar’s worth of analysis of the Capitals’ Halloween costumes from this year. And because we’re feeling extra stab-y like Ghostface, we’re ranking them in a Top 10 list.

Just be warned – if you consume this sugary imagery too fast, you might be left with a migraine and a tummy ache. And an anxious feeling that someone is sneaking up behind you… OMG WATCH OUT.

The one downside of Spencer Carbery’s move from Hershey to DC: worse trick-or-treating

With the Capitals on a three-day break between games, head coach Spencer Carbery is preparing for an even sooner event: Halloween. The rookie bench boss and his family will soon celebrate their first Halloween since moving to Washington, and preparations are in full swing.

After several seasons of coaching in the Sweetest Place on Earth, however, the Carberys’ chocolate-related expectations have gotten a little skewed.

The Capitals have a second-period problem

The Washington Capitals earned their first regulation win on Wednesday with a victory over the New Jersey Devils, but the team’s comeback came after giving up four goals in a disastrous second period. All but one of those goals came within a 2:11 stretch, allowing the Devils to erase what had been a three-goal lead.

Wednesday’s night performance may have been particularly egregious, but the Capitals have been blitzed in the middle frame so far this season — they gave up three goals in the second the previous night to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Head coach Spencer Carbery addressed the trend Friday and suggested which factors could be to blame.

Spencer Carbery calls Anthony Mantha’s two-point night against New Jersey Devils ‘the best game that I’ve seen him play since I’ve been here’

ARLINGTON, VA — The Capitals’ win Wednesday against the New Jersey Devils marked not only the team’s first regulation win of the season but also a standout performance from the oft-struggling Anthony Mantha. After a rocky start to the year that saw Mantha healthy scratched in the Cap’s second game, Mantha was one of the team’s best forwards Wednesday night and put up a two-point (1g, 1a) night.

Head coach Spencer Carbery had high praise for Mantha’s game against New Jersey when speaking to reporters at Friday’s morning skate.

Spencer Carbery’s second intermission speech in locker room helps spark Capitals’ comeback win over Devils

After having about as bad of a five-game start as possible, the Washington Capitals came out firing on all cylinders against the New Jersey Devils in Game Six of the regular season, Wednesday. The Caps dominated in the first period, outshooting the Devils 8-2 and taking a 3-0 lead into the locker room against one of the league’s best young teams.

Then the second period happened. The Capitals frittered away the lead quickly, allowing New Jersey to score four goals in a span of 5 minutes and 30 seconds.

“We did a lot of work in the first to get the lead we wanted,” TJ Oshie said. “I guess we thought maybe it would come easier in the second.”

“We haven’t had a lead the entire year so maybe we just got a little too loose,” Dylan Strome added. “We tried to do a little too much. Obviously a team like New Jersey they can kind of score at will.”

A frustrated Spencer Carbery called timeout with 9:59 remaining and lectured his group at the bench. That conversation continued into the second intermission where he apparently gave the players a choice.

Just how bad things are for the Washington Capitals five games into the Spencer Carbery Era

The Washington Capitals’ opening five games of the 2023-24 season have been a disaster. After missing the playoffs last season, the Capitals appear to be that same mess under Spencer Carbery — at least early on.

The Capitals sit at the bottom of the standings. Alex Ovechkin has only one goal in those five games. He also went shotless in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. The fanbase is also feeling these woes as the Capitals recently announced that its sellout streak is over after 14 years.

All of this is not fun. But I’m not writing this to make you feel pain. I believe that better times are coming for this Capitals team. And I want to be able to look back in time and remember just how poorly things began.

So, prepare yourself, after five games, this is where your 1-3-1 Capitals stand across the NHL.

Capitals frustrated after 4-1 loss to Toronto: ‘You have to find ways to win as opposed to finding ways to lose’

WASHINGTON DC — The Capitals dropped their third straight game Tuesday night with a 4-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. This time, the defeat came despite a lopsided 37-17 shot count for Washington, as well as Alex Ovechkin breaking a four-game scoring drought.

Though the game featured some bright moments, the Caps’ season so far has looked bleak. The Capitals have lost four of five games so far and scored a total of six goals. They’ve failed to hold a lead at any point during play. Players and coach alike expressed mounting frustration with their campaign thus far, which has seen multiple strong games go unrewarded.

“I think everybody’s kind of tight because it didn’t go our way,” Alex Ovechkin said after the game. “But we just have to fight hard to work and win.”

Spencer Carbery on what he learned as an assistant coach with Toronto Maple Leafs: ‘I could name 100 different things’

Spencer Carbery will oppose his former boss in a homecoming game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Tuesday.

After first transitioning from a player into a coach in the Washington Capitals’ organization in 2010, Carbery got his first taste of coaching in the NHL as an assistant coach on Sheldon Keefe’s staff in 2021. Carbery spent two seasons with Toronto, leading the team’s top tier power play and its forwards.

Carbery was all smiles when speaking about his previous experience on Monday, but admitted to the media that he hoped his prior years in the Canadian hockey mecca would give the Capitals an advantage — albeit small — in tonight’s game. But it’s what Carbery learned from Keefe, especially the creative ideas to try and find an advantage in games, that helps inform who he is as coach.

Spencer Carbery: Capitals must change their ‘perfect play’ mindset if they want to improve league-worst power play

The Washington Capitals are one of just three teams in the NHL that is yet to score a goal on a power play this season. Through three games, the Capitals have been put on their man advantage eight times and have come up with nothing.

Head coach Spencer Carbery, who ran a highly successful power play with the Toronto Maple Leafs the past two seasons, believes he knows what the problem is and how to fix it. The rookie bench boss spoke with assembled media in Montreal on Saturday ahead of his squad’s game against the Canadiens.

Spencer Carbery explains the Capitals’ early-season woes

Three games into the regular season, the Washington Capitals sit dead last in the Metropolitan Division with a 1-2-0 record. The Capitals have been out-scored by their opponents 12 to 4 and have trailed 122:42 of 185 possible minutes. They are one of two teams that have no power-play goals.

Fourteen of the team’s twenty skaters — including Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nicklas Backstrom, TJ Oshie, and Dylan Strome — have not registered a single point. Alex Ovechkin, 38, has no goals and gone two games without a shot on net for the first time in his career. Tom Wilson has more fights (2) than points (1). The Capitals’ likely future captain has more PIMs (18) than only four other players league wide — a very Oatesian statistic.

To say things aren’t working for the Capitals early would be an understatement. It’s been, as Spencer Carbery said after the Caps’ 4-0 shutout loss to the Penguins in their Home Opener, “the worst scripted start we possibly could have had.”

After the Capitals latest blowout loss, a 6-1 setback against a young and upcoming Ottawa Senators team on Wednesday night, Carbery was frank about what he thought was wrong.
