Very happy Capitals celebrate beating defending champs in locker room: ‘F$%in A right! Let’s go!’

The Washington Capitals came into Tuesday night’s matchup with the Vegas Golden Knights huge underdogs and a long shot to win. The defending champions were -155 favorites (ESPN) and had won 12 of their first 15 games, sitting at the top of the league standings.

But the Capitals, younger and scrappier than in years past, found a way to win, combining fantastic goaltending, opportunistic scoring, and hard work on defense.

Inside the victorious locker room, Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery shouted out four different players for their contributions to the win. Unlike his predecessor, who gave out postgame awards like axes and ninja headbands, Carbery kept it real.

Spencer Carbery provides update on Martin Fehervary after injured defender misses practice

The Washington Capitals saw a whole host of injured players take the ice on Monday to get some work in as they try to make their returns to game action. One name that was notably absent was defenseman Martin Fehervary.

Fehervary was injured in Friday’s victory over the New Jersey Devils and did not play on Saturday against the New York Islanders. The Capitals placed Fehervary on injured reserve on Saturday with a lower-body injury and recalled veteran blueliner Dylan McIlrath to fill his roster spot.

Head coach Spencer Carbery was asked to give an update on the young defender after Monday’s skate. Fehervary had been skating on the team’s top pair next to John Carlson.

Spencer Carbery on Charlie Lindgren’s recent performance: ‘He is certainly earning more minutes and more starts. He’s been fantastic.’

The Washington Capitals took down a high-octane New Jersey Devils team 4-2 on Friday that saw backup goaltender Charlie Lindgren star when it mattered most. Lindgren, starting in just his third game of the season, stopped 24 of 26 shots he faced in his second victory.

After three total starts, the 29-year-old netminder has an impressive 2.35 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage. His hot start has impressed head coach Spencer Carbery and could lead to more consistent playing time in the near future.

Spencer Carbery blasts Capitals, Evgeny Kuznetsov after overtime loss to Florida Panthers: ‘What are we doing?’

Spencer Carbery has been patient with his team for most of the season. He preached to his players to trust the process after a disastrous five-game start that had them sitting dead last in the Metropolitan Division. And he’s gone out of his way – while being refreshingly honest with the media about what he sees – to defend, encourage, or perhaps spin his answers at times to protect his players.

But Wednesday’s overtime loss to the Florida Panthers — one of the Eastern Conference’s most talented teams — was a different animal (pun intended). A frustrated Carbery named names and called out “mind-boggling” and “egregious” mistakes with the puck in his postgame press conference, showing his competitive drive.

Take for example the Panthers’ overtime game-winner 15 seconds into the frame.

Spencer Carbery on facing Florida Panthers after playoff defeat in Toronto: ‘There is some scar tissue there’

ARLINGTON, VA — Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery is plenty familiar with the Florida Panthers. The last time Carbery coached against them, the Cats had just eliminated his former Toronto Maple Leafs, defeating them in the second round on the way to their remarkable Stanley Cup Final run.

As the Capitals prepare to face the Panthers for the first time this year, that playoff loss remains fresh in Carbery’s mind. He admitted Wednesday morning that he still had something of a sore spot for the team that ended his season this spring.

Spencer Carbery critical of NHL after Rasmus Sandin denied assist on Tom Wilson goal: ‘I think that’s a joke’

The Washington Capitals came away with two points against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, but head coach Spencer Carbery still has qualms with the final box score. A full three days after the game, Carbery harshly criticized the NHL for refusing to award an assist to Rasmus Sandin on Tom Wilson’s first-period goal, which the league determined was unassisted.

“I am blown away how he doesn’t get an assist on that goal,” Carbery told reporters Tuesday. “I have talked to the league about it. I think that’s a joke.”

Brian MacLellan evaluates the job Spencer Carbery has done as Capitals head coach 10 games into the season

The Washington Capitals are 10 games into the 2023-24 NHL season and 10 games into the reign of rookie head coach Spencer Carbery. Carbery, the youngest coach in the league at 41, was named to his position at the end of last May and signed to a four-year contract by general manager Brian MacLellan.

MacLellan met with the media on Monday for a check-in on various team-related topics after the Capitals hit the 10-game mark in their 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. One of the primary matters discussed was his opinion on the job that Carbery has done to this point.

The Capitals currently sit fifth in the Metropolitan Division with a 5-4-1 record. They are one point out of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with at least one game in hand on every team in front of them.

Spencer Carbery on Capitals’ goal-scoring issues: ‘We desperately need to get more polished with our puck movement and passing’

The Washington Capitals have scored the third-fewest goals in the NHL to start the 2023-24 season with just 17 in nine games. Frustration over the lack of offense and inability to finish scoring chances have been growing among both the team and head coach Spencer Carbery, coming to a head for the latter after Thursday night’s 3-0 loss to the New York Islanders.

In that game, the Capitals put together chance after chance after chance against New York, thoroughly dominating the game everywhere but the scoreboard. For a team that boasts a ton of talent that has put up high-scoring numbers in the past, the challenge is to figure out what exactly is going wrong and whether it’s fixable.

That challenge has largely fallen on Carbery’s plate. When the rookie bench boss met with the media after practice on Friday, he spent the majority of his time describing what he thinks the exact problem is and how he thinks the Capitals can solve it.

Spencer Carbery provides injury update on veteran defenseman Joel Edmundson

Eight games into their NHL season, neither of the Washington Capitals’ major offseason roster additions have suited up in a game. Defenseman Joel Edmundson has been sidelined with a fractured hand he suffered during Training Camp and Max Pacioretty is still recovering from surgery on his Achilles tendon.

Head coach Spencer Carbery was asked after the team’s morning skate on Thursday if he had any updates on Edmundson, Pacioretty, and Nic Dowd’s timetables for return. While he skipped over specific news on Pacioretty and Dowd, he did fill in some blanks on Edmundson.

Spencer Carbery gives injury update on Nic Dowd as veteran center is set to miss seventh game in a row

Eight games into the season and the Capitals are in flux down the middle.

Nicklas Backstrom announced that he’d be taking a leave of absence from the team due to his hip injury issues on Wednesday and Nic Dowd has struggled with his own health problems to start the year.

Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery was asked to give an update on Dowd after Wednesday’s practice. With the team set to take on the New York Islanders on Thursday, Dowd was absent and is slated to miss his seventh game in a row.
