Michal Kempny blocks shot with face, spits blood, and then sits on bench like nothing happened

Capitals defenseman Michal Kempny made a potential game-saving shot block in the second period.

While just that fact makes the play notable, there were two other tiny details that made this shot block absolutely bananas.

First, Kempny blocked the shot literally with his face. Second, when Kempny went back to the bench, he spit blood, but then (!!!) sat there as if nothing happened.

Teach me your toughness, Kempner.

Karl Alzner’s Game-Saving Blocked Shot (Video)

The Washington Capitals beat one of the best possession teams in the league on Sunday, but not before weathering a last-minute onslaught by the Detroit Red Wings. That onslaught included six shot attempts – five of which were blocked by Washington defenders.

Karl Alzner literally saved the game himself, diving in front of a Riley Sheahan shot with 15.8 seconds remaining. Teemu Pulkkinen’s point shot ricocheted off Matt Niskanen’s skate to a wide-open Sheahan at the left circle. With Holtby facing the other direction, Alzner sacrificed his body – much like Tom Wilson did a few minutes earlier – and blocked the attempt with an awkward double-leg slide.

Alex Ovechkin Blocked a Shot With His Wrist; That’s a Really Bad Idea

Alex Ovechkin earns almost 9.5 million dollars against the salary cap each season, more than 13 percent of the Washington Capitals’ player budget. That’s why it’s a little worrying when Ovi risks injury– even more so when he does it blocking an inconsequential shot.
