Washington Capitals prospect Ryan Chesley was named to the United States’ World Junior Championship team on Friday.
Chesley was selected by the Capitals in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft.
The Washington Capitals could end up having a prospect play for the United States at a World Junior Championship for the first time in almost a decade. Defenseman Ryan Chesley, selected by the Caps in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft, was chosen to participate in Team USA’s selection camp for the 2023 tournament.
If Chesley were to make the final roster, he’d be the first Caps prospect to represent the USA at the U20 championship level since Riley Barber, Connor Carrick, and Thomas Di Pauli all did so at the 2014 tourney.

The Washington Capitals kicked the second day of the 2022 NHL Draft off by dealing goaltender Vitek Vanecek to the New Jersey Devils in a trade that saw them get the 37th pick in the second round back as part of the return.
They then used that second-round selection to grab defenseman Ryan Chesley from the US National Team Development Program. He is the first player the Capitals have taken from the US NTDP since they chose Shane Gersich in the fifth round in 2014.

The NHL Draft begins in Montreal tonight with Round One live on ESPN at 7 PM EST. The Washington Capitals will be making their first selection at pick number 20, which is the highest they have drafted since taking Jakub Vrana 13th overall in 2014.
The Caps usually say that they’ll be taking who they consider the best player available on their board, regardless of position.
