As the NHL’s Return to Play plan was approved with the passing of the CBA Friday evening, the protocols of the return have become more clear. As of Saturday afternoon, Travis Hamonic of the Calgary Flames and Sven Baertschi of the Vancouver Canucks have opted out of the playoffs.
NHL players have until Monday, July 13 at 5 PM ET to opt out without penalty.

Leafs defenseman Roman Polak suffered a grotesque injury during Game Two of the Leafs’ first-round series against the Capitals. After absorbing a huge hit from Brooks Orpik, Polak’s ankle turned the opposite direction of his leg. Afterwards, the Leafs announced Polak was done for the season with a lower-body injury.
Tuesday, Polak arrived the Maple Leafs’ locker room clean out day on crutches while modeling a large cast on his right foot.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are already without defenseman Nikita Zaitsev. Now they will be without one of their best blueliners for the rest of the postseason.
Roman Polak, who averaged 17:55 of ice time for the Leafs this season, was injured in the second period after absorbing a huge bodycheck from Brooks Orpik.
The Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs have been playing exciting run-and-gun hockey in their first round matchup, trading tough hits along the way. On Saturday night, fun hockey turned into something we never want to see.
In the middle of the second period, Toronto defenseman Roman Polak entered the offensive zone with puck. Unfortunately for him, Brooks Orpik was there waiting for him, dishing out a powerful, clean bodycheck after Polak crossed the blueline.
Warning: this is tough to watch.

The new-look Washington Capitals are certainly getting things done. And for the second time in as many games trade deadline pick-up Jason Arnott was the key to the Caps victory.
“They are great guys, experienced guys,” said Nicklas Backstrom, referring to the new acquisitions. “They have been in this league for a long time. They are great players too. I think that is what we need on this team. And hopefully we can just get as much advice and get together as a group before the playoff.”
The Capitals controlled the play early on, outshooting St. Louis five-to-one at the eight minute mark of the contest. However, it was the Blues who struck first as Alexander Steen converted on a three-on-two odd man rush at 11:25. Late in the first period, the teams began to ramp-up the physical play as Matt Bradley and Tyson Strachan dropped the gloves. Bradley ended the bout with a bang as he delivered three straight right hooks to Strachan’s noggin, sending him down to ice.
