The Capitals are moving away from cheerleading, replacing Spirit Squad with the ALL CAPS CREW

According to an email sent to Capitals Spirit Squad members and forwarded to RMNB by a source, the Washington Capitals are discontinuing the group primarily made up of former Red Rocker cheerleaders and launching a new group called the ALL CAPS CREW next season.

The ALL CAPS CREW will be departing from “dancing, choreography, the use of poms, the need for glamorized hair and makeup, and the use of form-fitting uniforms.” Team members will not be constricted by gender and be selected through an application and interview process. People who apply will be required to pass a general ice skating test and expected to work 30-plus home games next season.

Capitals select Red Rockers for 2017-18 season

Last week, the Capitals Red Rockers hosted their auditions for the 2017-18 season.

30 finalists emerged that day and on Saturday, the Capitals announced their 22-member, all-female team for next season.

A T-Rex joins the Red Rockers

While the Caps were playing a snorefest in Columbus, the Red Rockers were back at home practicing ahead of their next home game, Wednesday against Pittsburgh. And judging by the video, it appears the team has added a new member.

The Caps’ Video For Bensten Is Powerful Stuff

I hate feeling my own feels. The Caps just turned my insides to mush with this two-minute video dedicated to Bensten “Bman” Schone. As you’ll recall, Bensten is the six-year-old Caps fan who was struck by a car after accidentally sledding into the road. He’s been slowly recovering from a brain injury ever since.

The Brouwer Rangers Will Not Be Red Rockers This Year

What could have been. Sigh.

Washington Capitals General Manager George McPhee has yet to finalize the 2013-14 on-ice roster, but at least one of the organization’s off-ice squads is now set. Following two days of tryouts and interviews held at the Verizon Center over the weekend, the Caps introduced fans to the latest iteration of the cheerleading and community relations team known as the Red Rockers. But two rather visible Caps fans were turned away from the auditions.

Things Alex Ovechkin Could Do Since He’s Not Attending the NHL All-Star Game

Monday night, Brendan Shanahan suspended Alex Ovechkin three games for his hit on Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek. Tuesday morning, George McPhee announced that Ovi would be pulling out of the All-Star Game and its festivities in Ottawa. “Because he’s a suspended player, he doesn’t feel like he deserves to be there, so he’s not going to go,” McPhee told the gathered media. “He doesn’t want to be a distraction to the event.”

Fair enough. Yet Ovi’s decision to skip All-Star weekend has been met with criticism from some and anger by others. St. Louis Blues winger Andy McDonald tweeted a “a classless move by Ovi ‘opting’ out of the NHL Allstar Game.” What they don’t seem to realize is that Ovechkin has lots of other important things to be doing with his time. First things first, shaving-cream pie Mathieu Perreault.

It’ll be twelve days between when Ovechkin was suspended and when we next see him on the ice, so in the meantime, here are a few things we think he might be up to.
