Four Washington Capitals players returned to the ice for a small group workout on Thursday. It’s the first time the Caps have skated at MedStar Capitals Iceplex since March.
The Capitals posted a short and heavily-edited video on their social media platforms Thursday afternoon. To keep players safe and minimize possible exposure to the coronavirus, media are not allowed into the facility to cover practice or interview players, per the NHL’s Phase 2 protocol.
The Washington Capitals held their first day of small group workouts on Thursday at MedStar Capitals Iceplex.
Only four Capitals players participated according to the Washington Post’s Samantha Pell: Braden Holtby, John Carlson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Lars Eller.
It was the first time Capitals players hit the ice at the team’s practice facility since March.

The Washington Capitals have announced their date for small group activities (Phase 2) to resume: Thursday, June 11.
The announcement comes a day after MedStar Capitals Iceplex, the team’s practice facility, posted it would begin the state’s Phase 2 reopening plan this weekend.
Washington Capitals players are one step closer to getting back on the ice in DC.
Tuesday afternoon, MedStar Capitals Iceplex announced to their followers that, “We are thrilled to announce we are planning on entering Phase 2 this weekend!”
On the same day that the Pittsburgh Penguins announced one of their players tested positive for COVID-19, the NHL has announced that they will transition to Phase 2 of its Return To Play Plan on Monday, June 8.
Phase 2 will allow NHL clubs to reopen their training facilities for small group activities, on and off the ice.
On Monday, the NHL released a memorandum describing its protocol for phase 2 of its return-to-play plan. The 21-page document lays out how the NHL will bring players back to their teams’ cities and protect their health as they begin training again.
It is an unserious plan that will put lives at risk.

The NHL did not include a date for when Phase 2 will go into effect, but the league is targeting early June. The NHL has been self-quarantining and in Phase 1 since March 12.
