Devils starting goaltender Cory Schneider sat out Monday night as New Jersey played their first preseason game of the year against the Washington Capitals. Devils head coach John Hynes chose instead to give Keith Kinkaid and Scott Wedgewood equal time in net during the team’s 4-1 win.
Schneider, however, managed to stay active during the game, taking on a new role with the team.

You guys, the Swedes On Bikes era is officially over in Washington.
The Capitals just traded away forward Marcus Johansson to the New Jersey Devils for a second and third round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.
Johansson is coming off his best season as a pro. During the 2016-17 campaign, Johansson scored 58 points (24 goals, 34 assists) in 82 games and tallied the series-ending goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first-round of the playoffs.
The trade frees the Capitals of Johansson’s $4.6 million cap hit and leaves the team with $9.2 million to add nine more players to the roster.

A handful of NHL teams made last-minute trades before the NHL roster freeze went into effect Saturday.
The goal of most of these deals was to maximize assets, open room for players on certain teams’ expansion draft protection lists, and leave the Vegas Golden Knights with as little talent as possible.
Every team I've talked to the last few weeks is working on some variation of: "How do we give Vegas almost nothing?" Tampa pulls that off.

The Caps, a very good hockey team, played the Devils, a not very good hockey team, on Thursday night in DC.
The first period happened. And then the second period happened. After 40 painfully boring minutes of hockey, we went to the third tied at zero.
Then, with the Caps on the PP, SOMETHING FINALLY HAPPENED. Jakub Vrana scored to give the Caps a 1-0 lead with just under 13 minutes left.
Caps win 1-0! Holtby gets the shutout!

Thursday’s game between the Caps and the New Jersey Devils has been a brutal snore. With shot totals barely crawling into double digits, it’s been a typically Devils-y game: play the trap, obstruct, take zero chances, asleep in bed by 9:15.
This team makes hockey boring.

The Washington Capitals are home to wear some sweet jerseys for military night, begin their three-game homestand, and face the New Jersey Devils. The Capitals’ landed Kevin Shattenkirk before the trade deadline and tonight he will be making his Verizon Center debut.
Meanwhile, the New Jersey Devils will be trying to adapt to new squad changes after they sent forward P.A. Parenteau to the Nashville Predators for a sixth-round pick and traded defenseman Kyle Quincey to the Columbus Blue Jackets for defenseman Dalton Prout.

The Caps rolled into Newark looking to bounce back from Tuesday’s listless loss to the Senators. This wasn’t just any old hockey game though. A beard was on the line, people.
Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring with a goal that should remind all of us how lucky we are to watch this guy every game. Then the PP converted as Andre Burakovsky put the Caps up 2-0, showing the Devils why it’s a bad idea to pass the puck in front of your own net.
The Devils struck in the opening minutes of the second. The Caps got caught chasing in their own zone, and the lead was cut to to 2-1. The Devils continued to tilt the ice for the first half of the second period but there’s no need to worry because the best third line in hockey got to work and put the Caps up 3-1. Soon after, Dmitry Orlov sprung Evgeny Kuznetsov who slotted home the breakaway and, just like that, the Caps were up 4-1 and Keith Kinkaid’s night was over. The Devils scored before the second was over to make it 4-2. It was a PP goal against a Caps defensive pair of Brooks Orpik and Taylor Chorney…
Kuznetsov added an empty netter in the third.

Following a rare shutout loss, the Caps head north to right the ship against the New Jersey Devils. The Devs (can we make that a thing?) are dead last in the Metropolitan Division and most recently fell to the Kings, 3-1.
Meanwhile, there are no streaks the Caps can boast of, so consider this both a jinx-free pregame and a clean slate for the team. With TJ Oshie out and Top-Line Beagle in, anything goes.
