Robert Bortuzzo suspended for rest of preseason, one regular season game for elbowing Michal Kempny

After elbowing Michal Kempny in the head during a preseason game on Tuesday, Robert Bortuzzo has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason and one regular season game. This is the second suspension of the preseason, but the first to extend into the regular season.

Kempny did not finish Tuesday’s game and has since been ruled as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Travis Boyd is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury, Michal Kempny day-to-day

Caps senior writer Mike Vogel has announced via Twitter that forward Travis Boyd suffered a lower-body injury during Tuesday’s preseason game against the Blues. Boyd’s status is week-to-week.

Boyd’s injury effectively ends the battle for fourth line center, with summer acquisition Nic Dowd likely winning the spot.

Robert Bortuzzo will have a hearing with the NHL after elbowing Michal Kempny

During Tuesday’s preseason game against the St. Louis Blues, Michal Kempny took a hit to the head from Robert Bortuzzo and suffered an upper-body injury.

Wednesday morning, the league had a second look at Bortuzzo’s hit and determined he’ll have a hearing Thursday over the incident with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

After taking high hit to the head, Michal Kempny leaves game with upper-body injury

Washington Capitals defenseman Michal Kempny made a strong play in the offensive zone, which led to a goal by Madison Bowey.

But in the corner, Kempny took a high and, arguably, dirty hit from Blues defenseman Robert Bortuzzo, forcing the Stanley Cup-winner out of the remainder of the game.

Alex Ovechkin will play in his first game of the preseason tonight in Quebec City

The Capitals are up north to take on the Montreal Canadiens in their third preseason game. This game is special, as it’s being played at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City. The arena is built next to the Colisée Pepsi, where the Quebec Nordiques used to play.

This is the first preseason game for Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Tom Wilson, Michal Kempny, and Brooks Orpik. Thursdays tilt also becomes the third game for Jayson Megna, who is battling for the open spot on the fourth line. Megna is the only player to suit up in all three preseason games.

Hockey is back! Photos from the first week of Capitals training camp

On Saturday, the Capitals took to the ice at Medstar Capitals Iceplex for the second day of training camp. With the camp roster and invites split into three group, each group spent time doing on-ice practice, off-ice training, and video review.

Although the roster has gone through their first cuts, such as sending first-round draft pick Alexander Alexeyev back to his junior league team, Saturday’s practice featured everyone. Alexeyev, who had an impressive training camp, was in Group White with Caps vets Braden Holtby, Nicklas Backstrom, and TJ Oshie. Group Red paired goalies Pheonix Copley and Ilya Samsonov, both of whom are in the running to be number two in the net behind Holtby this season. Group Blue featured Alex Ovechkin and the Caps’ Russians, who along with Tom Wilson were on the celebratory end of a competitive two-on-two drill–Ovi was jumping up and down on his skates celebrating the win.

Devante Smith-Pelly is at Capitals MedStar Iceplex, and Michal Kempny and Andre Burakovsky are on their way

Devante Smith-Pelly, the playoff hero who chose to stay with the Washington Capitals despite better offers, is one of many Capitals players eager to start preparing for the season. Smith-Pelly is the latest to join the informal practices at Capitals MedStar Iceplex.

Meanwhile, Michal Kempny and Andre Burakovsky are flying back from overseas, both posting travel pictures on their Instagram accounts.

Michal Kempny drinks wine, puts seatbelt around Stanley Cup during his day with championship trophy

On Monday, the Stanley Cup arrived in the Czech Republic for the first time in three years after a warm,”f&cking unbelievable” sendoff by Alex Ovechkin. Recently re-signed defenseman Michal Kempny was the first of the team’s Czechs to get his hands on the championship trophy, hosting it at a backyard party at sunset.

On Tuesday, Kempny’s “official day” with the Stanley Cup began by first taking it to his hometown hockey rink in Hodonín.

He traveled in style.

After Alex Ovechkin says goodbye, Michal Kempny receives Stanley Cup and takes it to backyard party at his home

Alex Ovechkin partied all weekend with the Stanley Cup. He finally relinquished the NHL’s championship trophy Sunday night.

The Russian machine had a special message for Capitals defenseman Michal Kempny, who would be receiving the trophy next.

Michal Kempny calls his trade to Washington his ‘salvation’: ‘It pretty much saved my NHL career’

In February, ahead of the NHL trade deadline, the Capitals acquired defenseman Michal Kempný from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a third-round pick at the 2018 NHL Draft.

The trade came hot on the heels of a devastating 7-1 loss to Chicago, which prompted then-head coach Barry Trotz to call Kempný and reassure him. “I told him we’re not as bad as that game in Chicago. He was real happy about that.”

Adding Kempny to the lineup has been credited as one of the major reasons for turning the Capitals’ season around — though it wasn’t known then that that would mean earning their first Stanley Cup.

As much as Kempny gave to the Capitals on that road to their first championship, so to did the Capitals give back to him. In a conversation with TV Nova in the Czech Republic, Kempny called the Capitals his salvation.
