The Vancouver Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins Thursday night, but Michael Del Zotto was the biggest winner of the night.
During warmups, Del Zotto met with his loving throng of fans, but one interaction did not go how he planned.

A new hockey movie just hit the cinema. Goon: Last of the Enforcers is out in select theaters today (the closest in our area is the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Winchester, Virginia) and available on demand.
The movie is the second in the Goon franchise and directed by Jay Baruchel. The movie brings back the all–star cast that made the original so funny. Seann William Scott (American Pie) stars as Doug Glatt, along with Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Wyatt Russell (Everybody Wants Some), Jason Jones (The Detour), and with Elisha Cuthbert (24), Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy) and Liev Schreiber.
Several current and retired hockey players make cameos as well including Brandon Prust, Tyler Seguin, Michael Del Zotto, George Parros, Georges Laraque, and former Capital Mel Angelstad.
Angelstad, the first player to ever wear number sixty-nine in the NHL, had the opportunity to fake-fight Seann William Scott in the movie.
With Nate Schmidt heading to Vegas in the expansion draft, the Caps have a hole in their top-four. While the Caps do have a small handful of defensive prospects who will likely see time in DC next season, it’s unlikely any of these guys are ready for a full-time role on a second pairing in the NHL. The Caps could also go the trade route, but if they were unwilling to pay Vegas their asking price to not select Schmidt, it’s unlikely the Caps will be willing to give up the assets required to bring in a top-four defender on the trade market.
That leaves targeting an unrestricted free agent as the most likely option the Caps will take to replace Schmidt. Finding the cap space to do this is going to be tricky, but as things stand now, I think the Caps could have $2-3 million to spend on the UFA market to bring in a defender.

Semyon Varlamov is going to have to stop being injured, to actually contend for the Calder Trophy.
The Capitals’ Semyon Varlamov has been one of the better rookies in the NHL this season, and he’s certainly in the running to maybe take home the Calder Trophy. Several of the more highly touted rookies haven’t quite lived up to expectations, which leaves the field still wide open. By the nature of these kinds of awards, the winner tends to be the guy who played over his head the most and the longest. That means that the player who is on top now can easily regress and possibly even finish out of the top 10 at the en. Also, since it’s hard to compare players at different positions, the Goals Versus Threshold numbers that Behind The Net recently added are useful to put everyone on the same playing field. A little more than half-way through the season, here are some of the top contenders.
