Fort Dupont funding for new facility in jeopardy, DC council could vote to save it on Tuesday

The Fort Dupont Ice Arena has been a part of the Southeast DC community since 1976. It helps make hockey accessible for everyone through events like Gonzaga High School’s Purple Puck Tournament every Christmas, and programs like Kids-On-Ice which teaches children how to skate for free.

Funds promised to the rink by DC government for repairs and the addition of a second sheet of ice are now in jeopardy. In January, Mayor Bowser formally requested to shift the funds promised to Fort Dupont to a different use. Caps owner Ted Leonsis voiced his displeasure with the potential reallocation on Twitter, Friday.

Mayor Muriel Bowser estimates that at least 500,000 people attended the Capitals’ Championship Parade

On Monday, DC’s Mayor Muriel Bowser called in to The Sports Junkies’ show ahead of the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby at Nationals Park. During the call, Mayor Bowser estimated that at least 500,000 people attended the Capitals’ Championship parade to celebrate their first ever Stanley Cup win.

With the sheer volume of Caps fans that turned out to line the streets as the buses carrying the players drove by, as well as crowded the stage at the National Mall, it wouldn’t be shocking if that number was accurate.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman pays up on Stanley Cup Final bet, wears Capitals jersey

Wednesday afternoon, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman published two humbling, but awesome photos.

The mayor of Sin City published pics of herself posing in an Alex Ovechkin home jersey. Mayor Goodman did so to pay back a bet she started with Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser before the start of the Stanley Cup Final.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser issues order for fans to ‘Rock the Red’ safely

The entire DC area has come down with a highly contagious case of Stanley Cup fever as the Capitals compete in the Stanley Cup Final. With the Caps up 3-1 in the series, tonight’s Game Five has the potential to be historic for the franchise and the city. Tens of thousands of fans are expected to flock downtown to watch the game at various viewing parties throughout the city.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a proclamation Thursday morning, outlining the street closures around Capital One Arena, as well as encouraging all Washingtonians to “Rock the Red.”
