We learned earlier this week that Matthew Tkachuk had informed the Calgary Flames he would not be re-signing with them and that a trade was imminent. Well, that trade has happened.
He’s headed to Florida and the return is massive. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was first on the news.

The Calgary Flames are in shambles. The 2021-22 Pacific Division winners featured two players last season that scored above 100 points and it appears they will lose both of them in the same offseason.
First, Johnny Gaudreau turned down more money from them in favor of signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Now, according to a report from The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford and Hailey Salvian, restricted free agent Matthew Tkachuk has informed the team that he will not be re-signing with them and a trade looks imminent.
Wow.

I’m always a fan of goalies doing things other than stopping shots, which is why I’m bringing you video of the line brawl between the Calgary Flames and Arizona Coyotes Saturday night.
Goaltenders David Rittich and Darcy Kuemper both left their creases and got involved in the line brawl. Rittich tried to play more of a peacekeeper role while Kuemper was throwing hands at Matthew Tkachuk.
During the Flames-Knights game on Wednesday night a brawl broke out after Matthew Tkachuk skated into Marc-Andre Fleury, and we almost got a goalie fight.
Marc-Andre Fleury set his stick on the ice, but and shook his blocker, while having a stare-down with David Rittich.
But Rittich toed the (blue) line, and even though he looked ready to go, he didn’t cross it.

The Washington Capitals were desperate to end their seven-game losing streak. That fact was no more evident in the final seconds of the third period against the Calgary Flames.
As the buzzer hit zero, Nicklas Backstrom sent Flames superstar Johnny Gaudreau flying into the end boards with a shoulder to the chest.
The hit sent a competitive game overboard. The two teams intertwined in a violent, angry hug.
“There was a lot of emotion on both sides,” Tom Wilson said postgame. “Two good teams that want to win. We were playing hard right to the end there. It was loud. We were doing whatever it took to get the job done. That includes defending each other and sticking together at the end.”
Braden Holtby even got involved!
Hockey fans aren’t the only ones who like collecting sticks. Players do too.

Last weekend, Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk elbowed LA Kings defenseman Drew Doughty in the head. Tkachuk was suspended for two games and missed the Flames game against the Capitals in DC.
The Flames and the Kings met again Wednesday in Calgary. During warm-ups, Kyle Clifford had a pleasant conversation with Tkachuk. I’m sure they were exchanging muffin recipes. Definitely no threats of bodily harm or maternal expletives here.
