The Capitals aren’t in first place in the East Division because the New York Islanders have been playing just as well

The Washington Capitals are 11-2-1 (23 points) since February 16 but are not in first place in the East Division. That’s because Barry Trotz’s New York Islanders have been just as hot over the last month.

Recently, the Isles leapfrogged the Caps for first. With a win over the New Jersey Devils 3-2 on Saturday, the Islanders now lead the Capitals by two points with 40. They have a game in hand.

Mathew Barzal ends Game Three in overtime seconds after Jakub Vrana gets stopped twice on breakaway

The margin between winning and losing during the NHL postseason is painfully small: a bouncing puck here or a big save there. Sunday, the Capitals got the ultimate dick punch a couple minutes into the first overtime of Game Three.

Islanders forward Mathew Barzal scored the game-winner after sneaking behind the Capitals defense. The breakaway gave the Isles a commanding 3-0 series lead.

Watch the full 2020 NHL All-Star Skills Competition including the Elite Women’s 3-on-3 Game

The NHL hosted their All-Star Skills Competition at St. Louis’s Enterprise Center, Friday night. We covered a few newsy items including Tomas Hertl’s Bieber Mask and John Carlson once again hitting triple digits during the Hardest Shot Competition.

For those of you who missed this year’s edition of Skills, you can watch it in full below. I’ve also videos and the results of all of the individual events. I recommend watching the Elite Women’s 3-on-3 Game. It was very entertaining.

Islanders rookie takes penalty for playing puck while standing in the penalty box

New York Islanders Head Coach Jack Capuano dressed 19-year-old rookie center Mathew Barzal against the Washington Capitals on Saturday night. It was the 2015 first round pick’s NHL debut. Five minutes into the first period, Capuano probably regretted the decision.

Two minutes apart, Barzal took two minor penalties. The second was an interference minor for playing the puck while he was still in the penalty box.

I’m serious.
