Capitals pause game to air Mark Howe’s congratulatory words for Alex Ovechkin passing his father on all-time goals list

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin further cemented his place in the hockey history books on Friday night as he scored twice against the Winnipeg Jets to fully overtake Gordie Howe for sole possession of the second-most goals scored in NHL history.

He first snapped the tying marker past Jets goaltender David Rittich and then leaped over Howe with a no-look empty netter to seal a Caps victory.

Immediately after Ovi scored career goal number 802, the Capitals stopped the game with a minute left in regulation to air a congratulatory message from Howe’s son Mark on the jumbotron.

Alex Ovechkin gave signed sticks to Mark and Marty Howe, had sons meet them after game

Mark and Marty Howe attended Monday’s Capitals-Red Wings game at Capital One Arena in support of Alex Ovechkin potentially catching or passing their father, Gordie, on the all-time goals list. The two Howes did not end up witnessing history, but they did have a chance to get further acquainted with Ovechkin and his own family.

After the game, Sergei and Ilya Ovechkin met their dad downstairs where he introduced them to Mark and Marty.

The end of the moment was captured by NBC Sports Washington’s Al Koken, whom Alan May jokingly called a social media influencer on the telecast.

Alex Ovechkin has a third chance to tie or pass Gordie Howe against the Red Wings tonight. Howe’s two sons will be in attendance.

Alex Ovechkin will have another opportunity this evening to either tie or pass Gordie Howe to become the second greatest goal-scorer of all time.

Two of Howe’s children, Mark and Marty, will be in attendance at Capital One Arena to hopefully see him do it.

The Capitals will face Gordie Howe’s previous team tonight, the Detroit Red Wings. Ovechkin currently sits at 800 goals, one goal shy of tying Howe’s goal total of 801, and two tallies away from passing it. Howe spent 25 seasons in Detroit and scored 786 of his 801 goals with the team.
