Highlights from the Capitals’ 5-3 preseason win over the Flyers

The Washington Capitals defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3 in their final game of the preseason on Friday.

Lars Eller, John Carlson, Tom Wilson, Anthony Mantha, and Nic Dowd (ENG) all scored \in the victory. Ilya Samsonov stopped 20 of 23 shots, but gave up three unanswered goals in eight minutes and 55 seconds of the second period.

The game got especially physical late in the second period and the third, sporting fights from non-fighters TJ Oshie and Nick Jensen.

Alex Ovechkin left the game injured in the first period with a lower-body injury.

Opening Night is Wednesday.

Highlights from the Capitals’ 4-3 (OT) preseason win over the Bruins

The Washington Capitals finally got off the schnide and won their first game of the preseason. The Capitals defeated the Bruins 4-3 and improved their record to 1-3-1. The Capitals’ stars buoyed them to victory.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and TJ Oshie had a goal and an assist apiece while Alex Ovechkin had two assists and Anthony Mantha scored the team’s OTGWG. Vitek Vanecek stopped 33 of 36 shots.

Connor McMichael, who got a chance to center the third line with Hendrix Lapierre out of the lineup, started the night as one of Washington’s best players.

Highlights from the Capitals’ 3-2 (SO) preseason loss to the Bruins

The Washington Capitals lost to the visiting Boston Bruins, 3-2 in a shootout. The game marked Washington’s first game of the preseason.

Herndon native Joe Snively kicked off the scoring in the first period before Jake DeBrusk returned the favor later in the period. New Boston addition Erik Haula would deflect a shot in the front of the net to put the Bs ahead in the second, 2-1. That lead would last until Garrett Pilon backhanded a shot into the back of the net that sent the game to overtime. The Capitals eventually fell in the shootout.

Peter Laviolette’s lineup consisted of players who are mostly prospects and AHL players, but some Capitals stars played like Tom Wilson, Lars Eller, Dmitry Orlov, and Vitek Vanecek.

Connor McMichael and Hendrix Lapierre were both impressive during their first appearances in the lineup.

All the signings and wildness from the NHL’s Free Agent Frenzy

Wednesday marked the day where NHL general managers from across North America throw money at their problems attempting to appease their fan bases and get their clubs in playoff or Cup contention. The fun part is, the big splashes rarely work (see the 2016 edition) and now with a flat salary cap, GMs must be shrewd and cunning.

That did not happen. The first day of NHL free agency saw GMs make 163 singings for a total of 296 contract years and $785.1 million dollars per Cap Friendly.

The biggest signings of the day were defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who went to the New Jersey Devils on a seven-year deal worth $9 million a season, and Vezina finalist Philipp Grubauer who signed a six-year deal that pays $5.9 million per year with the Seattle Kraken. Brayden Point re-upped with the Tampa Bay Lightning (8x$9.5M) and the Blackhawks officially announced their mega-deal with defenseman Seth Jones (8x$9.5M).

Highlights from the First Round of the 2021 NHL Draft

The First Round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft was held virtually on ESPN 2, Friday night.

The Buffalo Sabres selected 6-6 defenseman Owen Power with the first overall pick. The Seattle Kraken went second and took Power’s University of Michigan teammate, center Matthew Beniers, with their first ever pick. The Washington Capitals were idle and did not trade up into the first round.

The draft started fun but ended awkwardly when the Montreal Canadiens selected Logan Mailloux.

All the signings and trades made after the NHL’s Expansion Draft roster freeze ended

As the clock struck 1 PM, an NHL roster freeze, prohibiting signings and trades for the Expansion Draft, was officially lifted.

The news came in both fast and furious.

Highlights of the Seattle Kraken’s Expansion Draft

On December 4, 2018, the NHL’s Board of Governors officially announced the approval of Seattle’s expansion bid to become the league’s 32nd team. Now, over two and a half years later, the Seattle Kraken are finally drafting their first roster in franchise history.

Despite nearly every team’s drafted pick leaking to the public ahead of the televised Expansion Draft on ESPN2, the broadcast still had some surprises – from botches of names to picks made by sea creatures.

All the Seattle Kraken’s leaked Expansion Draft picks

The Seattle Kraken submitted their picks for the Expansion Draft at 10:30 AM. Since then, their selections have been leaking out via Twitter.

For Capitals fans, the biggest news of the day was that goaltender Vitek Vanecek was picked by Seattle over other notables like Nick Jensen, Brenden Dillon, and Conor Sheary.

Meanwhile, Carey Price, who was the most intriguing possible pick of the draft, is staying put in Montreal.
