John Carlson and Nick Jensen surprise disabled veteran with new custom-fitted wheelchair
Laurie Wood was a photographer for the Navy for 18 years. Later the Virginia Beach native became a sheriff’s deputy. While leading a training exercise for recruits in 2012, Wood tragically fell from a roof. Wood suffered a spinal cord injury and broke her back. She lost the use of her legs.
The fall didn’t keep Wood down for long. According to ABC 7 news, the Navy veteran became a sled hockey player and months later was playing for the Virginia Beach Hockey Club.
“Sled hockey pretty much saved my life,” Wood said to NBC4’s Aimee Cho. “It kind of let me know that I can still do the things that I used to do before my injury. I just do it a different way now.”
Saturday, Wood attended Capitals practice and was giving out USA Warrior branded hats and shirts to fans. Later, Wood got an emotional surprise herself.
