Joel Edmundson to miss 4-6 weeks with fractured hand

ARLINGTON, VA–The Capitals will officially be without both of their biggest offseason acquisitions to start the regular season. On Wednesday morning, the team announced that defenseman Joel Edmundson will miss 4-6 weeks after undergoing a procedure on a fractured hand.

Edmundson’s injury came on Sunday during an intrasquad scrimmage ahead of the team’s first preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres. He missed practice Tuesday before having a meeting with team doctors to determine the injury’s severity.

Spencer Carbery gives update on Joel Edmundson after scrimmage injury: ‘Probably not good, but we’ll know more tomorrow’

ARLINGTON, VA–The Capitals may have to wait longer than expected to see offseason acquisition Joel Edmundson in action. Though Edmundson was not in the lineup for Sunday’s preseason opener against the Buffalo Sabres, he sustained an upper-body injury during an intra-squad scrimmage and did not practice Tuesday.

Edmundson is set to meet with team doctors Tuesday afternoon, head coach Spencer Carbery told reporters. Carbery wouldn’t have a firm sense of the injury until after that meeting, but he didn’t seem optimistic.

Joel Edmundson misses Training Camp skate with upper-body injury, Trevor van Riemsdyk practices after leaving game early

The Washington Capitals returned to the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Tuesday after having a day off following their first action of the preseason. But one player did not come out of Sunday’s action unscathed and it’s not one who played against the Buffalo Sabres.

According to TNT’s Tarik El-Bashir, veteran defenseman Joel Edmundson suffered an upper-body injury in the scrimmage held for players not on that gameday roster. The newly acquired blueliner is still being evaluated to determine the severity of that injury.

Vincent Iorio gives up his number 6 out of respect to new teammate Joel Edmundson

ARLINGTON, VA — When Vincent Iorio plays his next game for the Washington Capitals, he’ll do so with a new number and perhaps with even more respect from his teammates.

Iorio changed his number from 6 to 2 over the summer. The Coquitlam, British Columbia native made the change after the Capitals acquired rugged defenseman Joel Edmundson from the Montreal Canadiens for two draft picks.

Edmundson wore number 44 with the Habs, but preferred his old number 6 that he wore during previous stops with the St. Louis Blues (2015-2019) and Carolina Hurricanes (2019-2020). So Iorio, who made his NHL debut while wearing 6, showed respect to the veteran player and gave it up to be a good teammate.

Nicklas Backstrom, Joel Edmundson join informal practices ahead of training camp

Nicklas Backstrom has officially made his return to DC, jumping in for an informal skate at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Backstrom spent the summer in his hometown of Gävle, Sweden while continuing to recover from undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in summer 2022.

Offseason addition Joel Edmundson was also on the ice Monday, making his first appearance in DC since joining the team in a July 1 trade with the Montreal Canadiens.

Newly acquired defenseman Joel Edmundson on reuniting with Trevor van Riemsdyk: ‘If we’re paired up together that’d be great’

The Washington Capitals made a move to grab veteran defender Joel Edmundson from the Montreal Canadiens this past weekend, sending two draft picks in return. With the trade, Edmundson, 30, immediately becomes the most tenured and experienced member on the left side of the team’s blueline.

Edmundson is an eight-year veteran of the NHL, making stops in St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, and Canadiens. As a member of the Hurricanes, he crossed paths and played with Caps defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk.

Edmundson spoke about that prior connection with TVR and his hopes to rekindle it in his first meeting with the media post trade on Wednesday.

Brian MacLellan says ‘nothing’s panned out’ despite Capitals’ aggressive offseason strategy

ARLINGTON, VA — An already-aging Capitals roster got older on Saturday, signing 34-year-old Max Pacioretty and trading for 30-year-old Joel Edmundson.

Those moves diverged from what had appeared to be the Capitals’ planned strategy last month, when general manager Brian MacLellan signaled that the team intended to get younger this offseason.

MacLellan seemed to confirm on Sunday that the last week hasn’t gone as hoped. The Caps failed to trade up at the draft and the team tried to trade for younger players but couldn’t reach a deal.

Capitals acquire defenseman Joel Edmundson from Montreal Canadiens for two draft picks

The Washington Capitals have added to their defense corps through trade on the opening day of NHL free agency. Left-handed defenseman Joel Edmundson is arriving from Montreal in exchange for a 2024 third round draft pick and a 2024 seventh round draft pick.

The Canadiens will be retaining 50-percent of Edmundson’s $3.5 million salary.

The weirdest, silliest, drunkest moments from the St. Louis Blues’ Stanley Cup parade and rally

For the second year in a row, the Stanley Cup has gone to a franchise that has never hoisted it before. On Saturday, for the first time in the city’s history, St. Louis welcomed Lord Stanley’s Cup with a parade unlike any the city’s seen before.

There were many beautiful, profound moments–like Laila Anderson raising the Cup and Blues’ legend Bobby Plager thanking the city for believing in them–there were many moments that were…less dignified. Let’s enjoy those too, shall we?
