Suffering From Laryngitis, Joe Beninati Hopes to Return for Friday’s Caps Game

The last three Washington Capitals game broadcasts have been different. They’ve been missing the finely dressed Joe Beninati, who has been the team’s play-by-play man for HTS/CSN Washington since 1994.

Beninati was last seen on television on Friday, when he was covering the NCAA Hockey Midwest Regional for ESPNU in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“We had two semifinal games [to call on] Friday,” Beninati told me by email. “On Friday afternoon before the games began, I felt like my voice was weakening with laryngitis. I called both games and by the time I finished those six hours on air, my voice was shot.”

Filling in for Joe B. has to be tough. It’s even harder when you have to do it on short notice, which Al Koken was forced to do on Sunday after Beninati fell ill. There are, after all, a lot of names to memorize in play-by-play. It seems Smokin’ Al, who flew into Nashville last night after doing yesterday’s game, remembered one name a little too well: Calle Johansson.

Gambling with Play Money: Caps Casino Night in Photos

Wednesday night, the Washington Capitals held their fourth annual Casino Night at the Pentagon City Sheraton. Fans had the opportunity blow fake money gambling with their favorite players, as well as dishing out real money on a live auction featuring big-ticket experiences, a silent auction on equipment and memorabilia, and a raffle. The money made from Casino Night will benefit the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation. The team has raised nearly $1 million on past Casino Nights, and the live auction this year took in over $40,000.

“We did a got of research on craps,” Karl Alzner, who was there with his wife Mandy as well as her mom and grandparents, told me. “The correct throw and the technique and all that.”

“Even though it’s play money it’s still a lot of fun,” Alzner added. “We get to dress up.”

When I talked to Tom Wilson about the night, he had one main takeaway.

“Ovi’s pretty risky,” Wilson said.

Craig Laughlin Didn’t Know He Got Drafted, Read it in the Newspaper

Every night that Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin do the play-by-play of Caps games is a joy. Thursday night against the Florida Panthers was no different.

While Joe B. and Locker talked about the Caps trivia answer of the night, the former 30-goal scorer with the Caps revealed a funny story about how he found he was drafted. You see, kids, before cable and ESPN, the draft was covered a whole lot different.

RMNB on CRL: Inside Joe B’s Suit of the Night

We’ve let Ian have the fun long enough. He’s played video games with Tom Wilson and poured “wine” over his head with Olie Kolzig. For Russian Machine’s third CRL segment, I was determined to bring some respectability back to the blog. And what’s more respectable than a four figure suit.

As you guys know, we’ve been tracking Joe B.’s suit of the night for years. We have an unhealthy obsession with how the guy looks. Thankfully, Joe B. wasn’t creeped out too much.

Two weeks ago, I joined Beninati and Alan May at DePandi, his tailor’s shop in Chevy Chase. Joe B. brought along a number of his favorite suits to show us, as well as a few to try on me. Yeah, I got dressed by Joe Beninati. Be jealous.

Joe B Saying “Can You Smell What The Rock Is Cooking?” Is Maybe The Best Thing Ever

During Sunday’s 4-1 win over the New York Rangers, CSN’s Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin put forward another #CapitalsTalk question (ugh, #lamehashtag): What’s your favorite hockey movie?

If you ask me, there are only three options, and they fall precisely in this order: Sudden Death (that Penguin fight scene always slays me), Slapshot (Go Bruce!), and Miracle (again!).

In the third period, Beninati presented some of his favorite response tweets. RMNB reader Nick P.’s response was just bizarre.

Who Were The Girls With the Giant Joe B and Locker Signs?

Megan D. and Colleen B. hold up their signs proudly.

During Saturday night’s Washington Capitals-Columbus Blue Jackets game, CSN cut to two Caps fans holding oversized photos of Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin. It was a memorable part of the game and a fine tribute to one of the best play-by-play tandems in the league. I was intrigued: who were these young ladies?

Peter Talks Caps Hockey on Baltimore Sports Hockey Podcast

Peter was on the Baltimore Sports Hockey podcast last night to chat about the Capitals and the playoffs. Peter tried his best to mask his pessimism, and much merriment was had on topics such as:

Brooks Laich’s “guarantee” and the Caps’ playoff chances
What’s wrong with Alex Ovechkin?
What kind of offseason changes do we want to see?
Are there any Washington Capitals fans in Baltimore?
