NHL GMs discuss how to curb sucker punches after Tom Wilson’s fight with Ian Cole

Representatives from each NHL team are meeting at the Boca Beach Club in Boca Raton, Florida, for the league’s annual GM meetings. The general managers are discussing possible changes to the game.

“It seems like we’re just about perfect,” Vegas Golden Knights GM George McPhee said according to the Canadian Press. “The game is in a really good place in terms of whatever you want to measure.

“It’s just about as good as it’s ever been, which is great news.”

But on Tuesday, George Parros proposed “minor language changes” to the NHL rulebook, according to TSN’s Frank Servalli. The vice president of the NHL’s Department of Player Safety wants more flexibility to dole out supplemental discipline for sucker punches after watching Tom Wilson’s fight with Ian Cole.

‘You never want to see a guy get hurt’: Tom Wilson broke Ian Cole’s orbital bone in a fight

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson has had several vicious fights during his career, including, most recently, bouts with Blake Coleman and Jamie Oleksiak.

The Caps enforcer’s latest fight, a 20-second, one-sided pummeling of Ian Cole, came after the Avalanche defenseman delivered a headshot to star center Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Avalanche say that Cole, who was bleeding from multiple gashes from his head, is out indefinitely with a broken orbital bone according to The Denver Post’s Mike Chambers.

Monday morning, ahead of the Caps’ back-to-backs with the Los Angeles Kings and Columbus Blue Jackets, Wilson spoke to DC101’s Elliot Segal of Elliot In The Morning and commented on the Cole fight.

Ian Cole misses practice day after brutal fight with Tom Wilson, Nikita Zadorov promises revenge

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Ian Cole reportedly missed practice Friday at MedStar Capitals Iceplex and is likely injured after his fight with Tom Wilson.

The news was first tweeted by longtime Avalanche reporter, BSN’s Adrian Dater.

Tom Wilson bloodies Ian Cole in fight after Avalanche defenseman’s blindside hit on Evgeny Kuznetsov

Tom Wilson was effectively ejected from the Capitals-Avalanche game in the third period after coming to the defense of Evgeny Kuznetsov. Kuzy was targeted with a blindside headshot by Avalanche defenseman Ian Cole, sending the Caps center to the quiet room for concussion protocol.

In a rage, Wilson threw his gloves off and instigated a fight with Cole, raining uppercuts to the hockey player’s face.

Cole was bloodied in the bout and was ejected from the game.

Overshadowed by Sid vs Ovi, Braden Holtby and Marc-Andre Fleury could be keys to series

The second round matchup between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins has an easy narrative: Alex Ovechkin vs Sidney Crosby. However, there is a one-on-one battle brewing between the pipes as Marc-Andre Fleury attempts to out-duel Braden Holtby, one of the best playoff goalies in recent NHL history.

Young netminder Matt Murray was fantastic for the Penguins during last year’s run to the Stanley Cup, having taken the job after Fleury got injured. When the veteran finally got a chance in net, he faltered and Pens head coach Mike Sullivan jumped back to Murray. But teams, fans, and media members alike were impressed by how Flower, as he’s known, handled the situation.

This year, the script has been flipped, with Murray, 22, forced to sit in the press box after getting injured in the first game of the playoffs. His return does not seem imminent. (more…)
