Everybody’s favorite non-Slapshot mascot, Gritty, made a big impact on Saturday’s Stadium Series game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers.
Doing his best Lady Gaga Super Bowl impression, Gritty made his grand entrance from the Lincoln Financial Field roof, rappeling down from the top of the stadium while wearing bright LED lights.

Gritty is not just a Philadelphia sports mascot. To some, he’s a political icon. The Flyers’ fluffy orange monstrosity has “become a symbol of progressive politics and resistance to Trumpism” and his imagery has been adopted by protesters marching against white supremacy.
Earlier this month, Gritty added the role of advocate to his resume by expressing support for the LGBTQ community and inclusiveness in hockey. And he did it with his belly button.

Gritty is an inexorable force of chaos and Capitol Hill got to witness the full breadth of the mascot’s antics on Wednesday morning.
From tying up a Penguins fan with an extension cord, to yanking the shirt over the head of a congressman, Gritty was anything but predictable at the 2019 Hockey Day on the Hill event.
Gritty, the manic, bright orange, dead-eyed Philadelphia Flyers mascot who took the hockey world by storm last September, had no mercy for any taunting Penguins fans that were at the event.

Let’s be honest. Gritty, the Philadelphia Flyers’ orange, furry, dead-behind-the-eyes mascot, has already stolen the show at the All-Star Game and it hasn’t even happened yet. Sorry, Auston Matthews. No one cares about your sock-less wardrobe on the red carpet.
In wrestling terminology, Gritty has given any player or mascot who has taken a photo with him the rub. The brotherly-loving furball has 217k Twitter followers, more than almost every NHL All-Star.

It’s been a stressful week, but at least it’s–oh. Monday.
Thankfully, the Flyers revealed their new mascot Gritty, and he/she/it is both giving us life and keeping us awake at night. It will haunt our dreams when sleep finally overtakes us. If we survive the nightmares of its gloriously gyrating belly, it will make us breakfast in the morning and stare at us with its googly eyes while we eat.
