Angry Holtsy: Braden Holtby’s Meltdown After Getting Pulled (Video)

Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby has been dynamite lately, starting 11 straight games from February 9 to March 7. During that stretch, Holtby had three shutouts and only had a save percentage under .900 in two games. His play helped the Capitals get out of dead last and back within striking distance of the playoffs.

Against the Rangers on Sunday, however, Holtby struggled, giving up three goals on 22 shots. On New York’s first goal, he caught out of position, allowing Derek Stepan to bank the puck off his pads from behind the goal line. After giving up two more goals in the second, Head Coach Adam Oates had enough and decided to give Holtby the hook for Michal Neuvirth, who hadn’t played since February 7.

Braden wasn’t too happy about his benching or his performance.

Joel Ward and Mathieu Perreault Argue Over Goal (It Was Totally Perreault’s)

During the Capitals’ 5-2 loss to the Islanders Saturday, the team showed resilience coming back from two one-goal deficits. The first comeback happened early in the second period, when Joel Ward, no wait I mean Mathieu Perreault — really, it was Ward. Are you serious bro? No way man. Well, when one of them scored on the power play to tie the game at one goal apiece.

Timeout: Let’s Dissect the Capitals Awesome Four-Goal First Period Against the Panthers

The Florida Panthers opened tonight’s game against the Washington Capitals with four straight shots on Braden Holtby in the first 1:44 of game action. They looked sharp. They looked ready to get out of the Southeast division cellar. The wheels fell off 24 seconds later.

As John Erskine wound up from the Panthers’ blue line — in what he would later admit was just a dump-and-change — Florida’s starting goaltender Jacob Markstrom mis-judged Erskine’s blast and allowed the puck to squeak through his seven-hole. 1-0 Caps.

2:36 later, the Capitals would score on their very next shot, as Markstrom was caught off guard by Wojtek Wolski‘s strong net crash. Enter Scott Clemmensen.

Clemmensen gave up two more goals — one to John Carlson and another to Mike Ribeiro — in the next six shots. The Capitals received a standing ovation and headed into intermission with a 4-0 lead, their biggest goal explosion this season.

“I don’t know what to say,” Markstrom told reporters after the game. “It was terrible. I feel like I let the team down. I am there to stop pucks, and I didn’t do that tonight.”

The Capitals beat the Panthers 7-1.

Alex Ovechkin: “I Think Milbury Just Doesn’t Like Russians”

Mike Milbury doesn’t think highly of Alex Ovechkin. That was clear when the failed Islanders GM delivered his frothing rant about Ovi during last week’s Caps-Flyers game. He said Ovechkin acted “like a baby,” and should instead “act like a man for god’s sake.” He said it was “an awful display of hockey” by Ovechkin. He said Ovechkin “should be ashamed of himself.”

Now it seems Ovi has a few thoughts of his own.

“I can talk about his work as an Islanders general manager,” the Caps captain told Slava Malamud of Sport Express. “I could care less about his opinion.”

Ovi made his comments after Washington’s thrilling overtime win over Boston, in which he crashed into Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask approximately 83 times. That game ended with a highlight-reel goal by Eric Fehr in overtime, a comeback that could have been spurred on by Ovechkin’s intermission comments to the team with the Caps down 3-0 after one period.

Deflections and Fist Pumps: Tomas Kundratek Scores His First NHL Goal

Tuesday, while also a good night for the Washington Capitals, was a great one for former Hershey Bears defensemen. First, Steve Oleksy notched his first NHL point, getting an assist on Mike Ribeiro’s second period tally. Later in the period, it was Tomas Kundratek‘s turn. With the Caps down 3-1, Kundratek put Washington within one with a pin-balling shot that hit the back of the net for his inaugural NHL goal. Thanks to Eric Fehr’s magical overtime marker, Washington came back to win 4-3, beating one of the league’s top team in the Boston Bruins. Kundratek, adding to his memorable night, had an assist on the game winner.

“It’s great to comeback in a game like this against a team like this,” Kundratek said after the game. “It’s great thing for us. We’ll have to keep going after this.”

“Fans were pushing us forward,” he added. “It was unreal. It was a great crowd.”

L1, R1, Left Stick, Square: Eric Fehr’s Overtime Game-Winning Goal Was Straight From a Video Game

Eric Fehr is a lot of things: a good dude, a hard-worker, and a Blue Jays fan (yech). But there is one thing he’s not: a dangler. Against the Bruins on Tuesday, Fehr changed that, busting out the video game moves on a breakaway sprung by Nicklas Backstrom. It’s a highlight reel goal and the capstone on Washington’s biggest win of the season so far.

The Alex Ovechkin Pass That Summed Up The Night

Ten minutes into tonight’s game, I lost all hope of the Capitals winning. It wasn’t the two goals the Caps gave up in the first 4:04 (unlucky goals on broken plays). No, what made me despair was this one terrible pass by Alex Ovechkin that revealed how crummy everyone else was playing. As Ovi curled around the Flyers net, he sent a lackadaisical, no-look backhand pass to …no one. The pass went 185 feet down the ice until Braden Holtby came out of his net to play it. Basically the opposite of how it’s supposed to go.

The Capitals played nearly flawless hockey in Tuesday’s 3-0 shutout of Carolina, but that doesn’t mean that they can come out against the Flyers a night later and play like decapitated poultry. They lacked effort and focus in Philadelphia. As Neil stated earlier, last night’s victory only improved the Caps chances of making the playoffs to 19%. They have a lot of work to do.

Maria Kirilenko Watches Alex Ovechkin’s Hat Trick Live, Says Ovi’s Dad Cried At Engagement News

Attending Saturday’s Washington Capitals game, Alex Ovechkin’s fiancée Maria Kirilenko got a special treat. Ovi scored a hatty for the first time in over two years.

While CSN Washington didn’t pan to Kirilenko sitting in the lower bowl, the Devils broadcast on MSG drank from the Ovi-Kirilenko well a lot. They zoomed in on her celebrating with Ovi’s father Mikhail (giving the thumbs up) after Ovechkin’s third goal. MSG’s Deb Placey interviewed Kirilenko during the second period, after Ovi scored his first goal of the night.

Animated: Eric Fehr’s Big Hit on Anton Stralman

Last season with the Winnipeg Jets, Eric Fehr had a disaster season. Still feeling the effects of shoulder surgery, the big six-foot four-inch winger had two goals in 35 games. Winnipeg did not offer him a contract to come back.

His shoulder sure looks healthy now. During the second period of the Capitals match-up Sunday against New York, Fehr drove his shoulder into Anton Stralman’s chest, leveling him to the ice.

Fehr is riding a four-game point streak after assisting on John Carlson’s first period goal. The winger has three goals and three assists during that span.

Good signing, GMGM.

The Greatest GIF: John Erskine’s 360-Degree Face Plant

Lil’ Muffin John Erskine has been awesome this year. He beat up George Parros, he scored a clutch goal, and he’s been quietly playing 18 quality minutes per night (when he’s not suspended).

Unfortunately for John, this is not going to be a fun story. Towards the end of the third period, with the Capitals down 5-4, Big John jumped off the bench as the Florida Panthers came down the ice for a 4-on-2 break. Instead of actually contributing to the play, Erskine falls onto his back and does a 360-degree tumble onto his face. Or in Fedor’s words, he “Colaiacovo’d.”
