Last week, it was learned that DC government was considering reallocating $21 million of funding which had been previously committed to Fort Dupont Ice Arena to renovate their current facility as well as build a new two-rink facility nearby. Fort Dupont has long served the Southeast DC community by providing many free and reduced-cost programs like Kids on Ice, which teaches kids to skate.
Public support swelled for Fort Dupont. A GoFundMe campaign was started to help raise funds for the renovation. The Leonsis family, the NHL, and Monumental Sports Entertainment each donated $100,000 to the campaign.
The vote on the decision was to take place Tuesday at a DC City Council meeting, but on Monday evening it appears that an agreement has been reached.
