Former Capitals Daniel Sprong and Dennis Cholowski set to be UFAs after not being tendered qualifying offers

Daniel Sprong scored six goals in 16 games for the Seattle Kraken after the Washington Capitals dealt him at the trade deadline. That goal-scoring clip was not enough for the Dutchman to earn a qualifying offer and a 10 percent raise ($797k) from the Kraken, a team who scored the fourth-fewest goals in the NHL last season.

Dennis Cholowski, a depth defenseman who was a waiver wire pickup by the Capitals last season (before being reclaimed back by Seattle), also did not receive a qualifying offer from the Kraken. Seattle announced the news on social media before Monday’s 5 PM deadline.

Both players will be unrestricted free agents on Wednesday per the team.

Dennis Cholowski claimed by Seattle Kraken on waivers

Defenseman Dennis Cholowski‘s time in the Washington Capitals organization is over. The 23-year-old was put on waivers by the Caps Tuesday and now has been claimed by the Seattle Kraken.

The Caps originally claimed him from Seattle on October 14, a day after their home opener against the Rangers.

Capitals place defenseman Dennis Cholowski on waivers

The Washington Capitals placed defenseman Dennis Cholowski on waivers Tuesday. With the team getting healthy and no longer able to utilze a taxi squad, the Capitals had no more room for the reserve defenseman whom they claimed from Seattle on October 14.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman first announced the news on Twitter.

Lines: Garnet Hathaway skates on top line as TJ Oshie misses morning skate with upper-body injury

The Washington Capitals have had to put their lineup into a blender again as a handful of players are out with injury or are unavailable due to COVID-19 protocol.

TJ Oshie, who missed Sunday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks, did not take the morning skate as he continues to recover from an upper-body injury. The same goes for Conor Sheary and John Carlson who remain out due to the aforementioned COVID protocol.

Capitals place Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie on injured reserve, re-assign Michal Kempny to taxi squad

The Washington Capitals are in St. Louis to take on the Blues tonight. Before puck drop, they made a few notable roster moves.

Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie, who were both recently sidelined with non-COVID illnesses, have been placed on injured reserve. According to The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell, neither forward traveled with the team for this two-game road trip which features back-to-back games Friday and Saturday.

Five Capitals players in protocol return for New Year’s Day practice as Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, and Carlson take maintenance days

The Washington Capitals held practice on New Year’s Day and saw the return of five players, who technically remain in COVID-19 protocol.

Dennis Cholowski, Nick Jensen, Justin Schultz, Daniel Sprong, and Vitek Vanecek all took part in the skate, according to the Caps’ Mike Vogel.

Meanwhile, there were a lot of players missing for various reasons.

Justin Schultz misses Capitals’ Thanksgiving Day practice after leaving game against Canadiens with injury

It was concerning when Washington Capitals defenseman Justin Schultz went down with an injury in the first period against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night, as he was almost immediately declared out for the rest of the game by the team.

That concern now seems justified as the 31-year-old rearguard was absent from the Caps’ Thanksgiving Day practice.

In Dennis Cholowski, the Capitals are getting a ‘great offensive-minded defenseman’ former teammates say

The Washington Capitals surprisingly claimed defenseman Dennis Cholowski off waivers from the expansion Seattle Kraken on Thursday.

Cholowski was the Kraken’s Expansion Draft selection from the Detroit Red Wings and at one time played with past and now current teammates, Anthony Mantha and Nick Jensen, in Detroit.

Mantha and Jensen spoke about the Capitals’ new addition at practice on Friday.
